Is there a specific tech manual for rebuilding the front end on a '62 Corvette? My understanding is that the front end came to Chevrolet as one piece and already to install in the car on the line, thus the lack of specifics in the AIM and the ST-12. I am looking for torque specs and details of re-assembly with exploded views etc.

Re: Tech manual for front end rebuild
there is a corvette repair manuel 53-62 that has most of the torque specs, no alot of pictures but some. It may be put out by chiltons. i bought mine on ebay. got a drawing of a 62 on the cover (car is blue) and a couple of people and seaguls in the background. AIM doesn't do any good in this situation. You could also do one side at a time and reassemble and refer to the other while doing it. good luck its a fun project to do.- Top

That's the ST-12 manual Dave mentioned in his post.- Top

Re: Tech manual for front end rebuild
Dave,
The torque specs for the front suspension are in section 14 of the ST-12. Section 3 has the procedures for all the components and some good photos.
In addition, Tom Parsons has posted a link several times (latest was around last week, search for front suspension or King Pins), to a post on another forum where he gave an overview of the procedure to rebuild the front suspension. Tom doesn't go in to details for each part, but he gives some great tips for the person doing this the for the first time.
You can also take plenty of pictures before dismantling the components to guide you when reassembling the suspension.
I started this process two weeks ago by dropping the cross member and dismantling it. I spent last week end cleaning and painting and hope to reassemble this coming weekend. Tonight, I just checked the fit of the King Pin bushings. So far, so good.
Regards,

Re: Tech manual for front end rebuild
This is a frontend I rebuilt recently for a 57 that John Neas is restoring for his wife. I've done several of these (49-54 pass car/53-62 Vette) over the past 40+yrs, but thought it would be good to put it all together with pictures because BOTH the early Chevy and Vette folks frequently ask questions. I didn't go into some of the finer details because I directed people to consult the ST-12 or the 49-54 pass car shop manual (many years ago, my mentor was my uncle ----Mom's older brother who was a factory trained Chevy mechanic----made me read the shop manuals BEFORE he would help me-------so, you can also learn from the manuals). I did try to be somewhat thorough in pointing out some tricks and using color pictures that may be lacking in the illustrations in the manuals.

Re: Tech manual for front end rebuild
With Tom Parson's link and an article in an old Corvette Enthusiast by John Hinkley that he sent me I feel pretty comfortable with the re-assembly. The ST-12 has the specs I was looking for and will also guide me thru it. The cross member came out like new from my sandblasting.
Does it get paint first before re-assembly or should it be painted after?
Thanks all for the input to the project.Attached Files- Top

The raw crossmember (as you show in the photo) was painted by itself before any of the components were assembled to it.- Top

Re: Tech manual for front end rebuild
David,
I am in the process of doing this job also. After cleaning all the parts I painted them. I assembled most of it tonight, I have one coil spring left to install.
The paint held up well to the reassembly.
