74 4 speed shifter reverse lockout

Need help identifying why the lockout on my 74 4 speed goes into reverse without raising the ears. Had the shifter out to replace a clutch. It was cleaned and lubed. It was working fine for several months, but after a trip the lockout malfunctioned. This is not a top flight canidate, but would like to keep the original shifter, would rather not think about a Hurst. Any ideas?

Have you removed your shifter knob and removed the lockout rod and spring and inspected the rod?

      Jim,
I removed the knob and spring and it looked fine. I also swaped it with my 72. No change

        Ed,

The lockout rod should be (about) 6" long. Remove it, measure it, and inspect the bottom end to be sure that it had not gotten sheared off.

When the rod is extended (resting position) it should block movement via a tab within the shifter body, on the reverse gate.

I found the problem. The retaining pin fell out of the control lever, which allowed the control lever to raise and not lock out the reverse. Joe and Jim thanks for your help.
