    Flight Judging Question

I am going to have our 67bb 390hp vert judged at BLOOMINGTON GOLD this June.I recived a top flight at Delafield Wis regional June o9 .I am working on some of the things the were wrong on the car.One item is the plastic insulator under the shielding cover this is a big block the judge states it should be milk color and perferated ??.What part of the plastic is perferated has any one out there have a picture. Also on the radiator mounting bolts the judge states there should be 4 more washers under the outer bolts there is 4 large 1&1/2 inch +a split washer under the bolt head any one know what this means ??

Here is a picture of the underside of my shielding. The plastic is kinda milked colored and it is perforated down the center and in the fold lines so as it will lie down in the hump.
The second picture is of how my bolts are on my core support to radiator mounts. Not 100% sure this is correct but I did not receive any deducts at Bloomington last year. No split lock washer! Maybe someone else will chime in??
    Hope this helps.

        Re: Flight Judging Question

        Great shot, Bill!
The washers were actually shims to keep those bolt ends away from the radiator.
As there was probably one assemblyman on each side there was probably some side to side variation as seen in the pic.
However, typically on original cars, we have seen the thicker washer that limits the exposed bolt end to approximately 3/16 of an inch or less.
Notice the exposed threads being longer on the right side of Bill's pic.
It appears that if the single thicker washer were used in each of the four locations, the result would yield about that 3/16" surplus consistently at all four locations.
You might also check your crush sleeves.
        Hope this helps

          Hi Albert

I too have a 67 427/390 Roadster. I just got the car judged at a Chapter meet and am taking it to the Regional in Bend Oregon in August. If you need a car to compare need pictures of anything specific don't hesitate to ask.

            Question on both items -
Does anyone know where you can get an accurate BB 'milky shield' with the perforations? I hear the typical big box parts are wrong.

On the rad supt - two questions, one, what was the difference to small block rad supt? and what bolt heads are you guys using in this application? RSC grade 8?

Believe bolts, washers were in place during "black out", shouldn't they have black paint on them? Appear to be void of paint.

                Ron -

The radiator and mounting scheme to the support was completely different between SB and BB; SB used the aluminum stacked-plate radiator with two pins into rubber grommets at the bottom and a central single bracket and insulator at the top, and BB used a conventional copper/brass radiator with two rubber-cushioned "saddles" welded at the bottom and two bolted at the top.

The bolts weren't in place during Paint Shop blackout - they weren't installed until much later in the process (after Body Drop) when the radiator was installed; they attach the upper radiator mounting saddles.

John, the basic mounting is obvious, how about the lower bolts that go forward into L brackets? I don't have a small block to compare to and have only had the opportunity to review a 65 BB which is different in that area, at least seems to be.

                      BB ign shield plastic anyone???

Which bolts are those? I don't recall any forward-facing bolts at the bottom of either radiator support.

                          Re: Flight Judging Question

Ron may be referring to the two bolts that pass through the radiator support (going forward) into two "L" brackets. These brackets have rods attached to them supporting the head lamp opening area.

Would that be the two bolts Ron?

Yup, those are the ones Ron meant - I forgot about them.

                              And....

I just pulled out two untouched classic head mark bolts, cad/zn plate remnants and all!

No $75 fleabay scramble for those - that can make it a very good day!

The forward facing rad shroud to supt bolts - anyone have original head marks for 66 - 67?
