    Anti Chatter Springs

I purchased some anti-chatter springs for my 1963.
The original spring that was still left on my car was a round wire spring and was 34 inches long. (collapsed length)

Is there some kind of trick to installing these springs?

Check the archives about the installation. There are some good techniques described there. My 63 had flat springs, but I removed to replace with new round springs. I had so much difficulty that I gave up. I believe the methods described could work, but I see no need for them on mine. I recall, back in the day, we used to remove them for better cooling air flow around the drum, specially when putting 14" wheels on earlier cars that had 15" wheels originally.

When I realized that my replacement springs being round were not correct anyway, it made the decision to not put any back on that much easier. My brakes were originally the sintered metallics and I replaced them with Matrix Ceramics. I tried to use new replacement drums, but they did not fit properly and, by the way, had no grooves for chatter springs. So, I ended up truing up my original drums for use with the new linings.

I did a search before posting and found nothing. Must be listed under some other title then anti rattle springs. I am thinking its not worth the trouble! I think I could get the longer old spring on, but the shorter flat springs would be a task. Energy better spent on more important things!

Connect the ends and roll it up into the groove. It's probably best to have two people.

Its been quite a few years since we discussed these brake drum springs. Took me a while to figure out which springs James was talking about.
I believe I brought this subject up on a post here around 2005 or mid 2006.
My 63 had springs on all four drums. It had been that way since 1970. By as the years went by I lost one of the original springs. Then with many posts here and comments by Franz Estericher and others I found out I could get away with just two springs. Think they are on the front of my 63 but I forget.

See August 10, 2006 for post(s) on brake drum springs.
