    Having windshield problems

What is causing my windshield on my 61 to seperate from the rubber everytime I clamp the convertible or hardtop down. It is a repro windshield & gasket assembled by Auto ENTEC.
Trying to get the car ready for a PV in Charlotte. Thanks in advance for any help.

Joel, my 57 does the same thing. The subject was just recently discussed. Try searching the archives. The top could be too tight. I let the vehicle sit out in the sun with the top partially secured. After it got hot, it clipped into place without any gap at the top of the windshield.

When you put the windshield together did you put the 5/16" spacer on top of the rubber when you put the top section on? Without this spacer the top rubber will pull up out of the glass.

i use a 3-m urethane caulking to cement the glass to the weatherstrip and the weatherstrip to the windshield frame. no way the tops will pull this assembly apart. mike

My first thought is that the windshield post tabs may be broken. Do the posts move when this happens, or just the top frame?

            Re: Having windshield problems

I had the same problem with my "61, but it is common on many of the C1 corvettes. After removing the windshield, I did 3 things:
            1. sent the post out, and had them machined for new tabs; these are much stronger than the original.
            2. did not use the supplied 3 piece rubber spacers for the post; they seemed to be to soft, so I made my own out of a hard urethane material; this gave me the pull down strength for tightening the 2 studs and prevented any movement.
            3. learned that there is more than one maker of the glass and that the heights vary by as much as a 1/4", I order the largest one available.

Hope that your solution is easier than mine was.

I listened to half of the guys who said oh no you don't need to glue your winshields when putting in a new one, your conscious is allways right, glue the hell out of them, my soft top fastens very easily and is still tight looking and my winshield on the drivers side still tries to pull away. Brad . Can a guy still get some kind of adhesive up inside there to try and hold it together, would sure like to try.

Thanks for your urethane idea. I've been kicking the adhesive idea around for awhile, but if you say it works that is good enough for me. I would like to know to what extent you urethaned. Could you describe your procedure in a little detail?

To everyone trying to help me with my windshield problem- I have a repro windshield which I am told is thinner than the original, so I have to figure out how to use that one. Mike McCagh's idea seems pretty good to me. I have new tabs on the pillar post and even hand pressure will make it pull apart. I'm in the process of removing it for the urethane fix.

fit weatherstrip to glass(center the lower lip so that its halfway point is dead center in the glass) then pull a foot or so section of weatherstrip off glass and apply the urethane. once you've gone the 360 degrees of weatherstrip to glass with urethane, then fit this assembly to the previously urethaned windshield framing. good luck, mike
