    Oil leak with torque only

    63 convertible SB

I have an oil leak in the front after the car has been driven. There is no leak if the car is started and left at idle. It is not leaking from the intake or the fuel pump. That leaves the timing chain cover and crank seal. I'm thinking of replacing them to see if that solves the problem. Any ideas?

How about that short bolt that plugs the threaded hole used with a longer bolt to secure the fuel pump pushrod when changing a fuel pump.

Take it out, clean it and the block threads, put some thread sealer on it, reinstall, and see what happens.

Serviced bolt as suggested, then wiped everything dry and went for a short 5 min run, nothing over 3000 RPM. Checked for leaks, found none. Went for a 15 minute run with punches up to 4000. Got out and crawled under the front and it was already dripping. Nothing on the fuel pump, but oil had collected on the back lip of the front crossmember and was dripping from there. Oil had also collected on the bottom lip of the FRONT (radiator side) of the PS pulley and was dripping onto the crossmember. I thought that perhaps a leak from the seal might be contributing but I checked the balancer neck and it was DRY. How can oil get to the outside of the PS pulley? Thinking this was bizarre, I wiped everything dry and made another run. Same results; oil on the bottom lip of the radiator side of the PS pulley was dripping onto the crossmember, then onto the floor. It almost seems as if oil is moving down the crank snout, around the threads of the balancer bolt and onto the PS pulley.

sealer should be used on the damper key to prevent a oil leak. i had one crank shaft that had the hole in the pilot bushing bored too deep into the crank oil passage and oil came out around the pilot bushing and on the clutch.

Is the fluid engine oil or PS fluid? Maybe the PS reservoir is overfull or the cap seal is bad.

            It is definitely engine oil.

Would it be a good idea to replace the key? If so, can that be done with the crank in the car?

you don't need to replace the key just pull the damper a put some non hardening permatex in the key way slot in the damper and reinstall the damper.

remove the bolts and pulleys and see if the oil is inside the opening in the end of the damper. that way you will know for sure the oil is coming out thru the crank snout

Permatex in the damper groove (key slot).
