    distributor machine

I would like to have the advance curve checked and functinality of a petronix module checked on a distributor machine. The distributor is an 070 FI distributor. i'm in the denver colorado area. Anybody know of one around here or have a sugestion? Jerry

    Jerry,
I can offer this information. I have an old sun distributor machine and it is not functional with anything other than points.

You may require something more current to accomodate the electronics. I don't know what that would be, sorry.

Actually there is a SUN adaptor for the magnetic pick-ups, but I don't know if it will work on the Petronics system. I can tell you it works just fine on the factory TI systems.

It may work depending on wheather the machine wants to see a closed contact with a reduction in resistence or it wants to see 12 volts. The Petronix wants 12 volts hooked to one side so I suspect it switches off the 12 volts. Can your machine detect that or is there another way to test Pertonix systems?

just use a timing light and timing tape on the damper if it is not already engraved and some one in the car to run the gas pedal and watch the tach. wear your earplugs.

Once the car is running I won't have any problem checking BUT before I drop in the distributor it would be nice to know if it's working. i've changed so much with the addition of the fuel injection i'm a little nervous about every component. It would make troubleshooting easier to know the distributor was working at least. Jerry

Jerry send a PM to Jack Humphrey through the "Members List" on the above line. Jack is from Colorado, and probably knows who has a machine out there. I'm still not sure what it take s to do Petronics on the machine though, but someone who uses their machine more than I do probably will know. Keep watching here, because there are some frequent posters on here who have distributor machines and will know the answer.

Just put a set of point in it to test/adjust the curve. You should have all the advance in by no more than 3500, so point bounce on the machine won't be an issue.

That's exactly what I did with the distributor in my 71. I had it set up using points, then swapped in the Pertronix unit. No problems at all.

Its one thing to have a distributor machine. Most don't have the capacity to check TI.
Jerry, Don Baker has boo coo distr machines. One of them is set up for just TI. Maybe you can talk him into testing yours. If you don't have his number email me thru AOL and I will get it to you. Meanwhile Don is not in love with Petronix.
