    Old Air products A-6 compressors

Anyone tried the new A-6 compressors ($480) sold by Old Air Products out of Fort Worth, TX? My original A-6 on my 66' is starting to get noisy. It still cools good, but is starting to whine as the rpm go up. Should I be worried?

I don't have any experience with their A-6 compressors, but I can say that Old Air Products did a good job rebuilding my original 1978 R-4 compressor back in 2002. The cost then was $195+S&H, but it has worked fine since.

You might want to consider a rebuild, rather than a replacement if yours is original.

While I have not seen their A-6 compressor, I would be surprised if they are not AC manufactured compressor that are left over stock

There are currently produced (metric) A6 compressors still available from AC Delco.

Then there are the "modern" S6 and Pro6Ten compressors that look similar to the old A6 but claim improved design and construction. I think Gary is talking about this one.

I have not tried the S6 or Pro6Ten, but they seem to be a good alternative if your old compressor is shot and you don't care about originality.

Old Air's compressor looks just like my original. I don't know if it's metric or not though. If you look on e-bay under "corvette A-6 compressor"
you can see it. Do the original A-6's start to get noisy as they get older?

The one(s) currently shown on E-bay that you referenced are the new AC DELCO metric ones. Old Air Products also recently started selling the Pro6Ten that I mentioned. It looks sort of like an old A-6, but is a newer design. Better reliability (compressor + seal), quiter operation, and less overall weight is claimed. Check it out. You may like it.

              Gary,

A couple of years ago I installed an AC Delco rebuild and had no problems at all and it came with a 1 year warranty, cost was about $240. Check it out.

                New A6 compressor producers

I'm researching new (not reman'd.) A6's at this very moment.

So far I've found 2 primary brands of new A6's: 4 Seasons and Alma Products (APCO).

I've read that APCO purchased the manufacturing rights to produce the A6, so it's possible that 4 Seasons gets theirs from APCO.

                  Mike,
Would you keep me informed on what you find out about the new compressors, their sources, costs, ect.
                  Thanks,
                  Gary
