67 Big Block Accelerator Ground Strap Orientation

    Hello all,

I did a search and found a posting that had this exact same title but alas the pictures have been deleted out of photobucket so I'm still trying to find out the correct installation of the accelerator ground strap on a '67 427/390hp car.

I found a picture of a small block in the AIM and it shows the base of the ground strap being placed directly above the intake manifold, then the radio shielding stand, and finally the bolt.

As for attachment to the accelerator lever, it is showing the little end of the ground strap being bolted to the outboard side (driver's side) of the lever.

Now to throw a wrench in things, the Long Island instruction sheet shows the big end of the ground strap on top of the radio shielding stand...

So, I'm pretty sure that the small end fits on the outboard side of the lever but I'm lost as to how the big end is attached.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    Thanks in advance,

    Carl

I believe this is in the AIM under L36 engine.

      Carlton,

On my '66 L-36 have the large end mounted under the intake manifold bolt that holds up the ignition stand and small on outside of accelerator lever. Believe this is what AIM calls out.

        Hi Carlton
The AIM diagram clearly shows the sequence to be as your SB comment, from the top-down:
        Intake Bolt
        Shielding Bracket
        Ground strap
        Intake Manifold
Look in the U69 Section, pg. G405.
The ground is part of the Radio option, so, configuration/orientation is the same for both SB & BB and would not be listed in the optional BB engine sections.

I was also searching for this config, but for an L71. I was told the small end of ground strap went on the bolt that attached the coil frame to the intake manifold, with star washer on top of strap. Can anyone confirm that, there is no AIM picture for the L71.

Michael, I don't think the ground starp will reach from the accel lever to the coil frame with the necessary slack needed for free movement.
            Please see above.

There's lots of slack, I have had it full throttle many times since I put the strap on and no problems. And I should have said the big end of the strap goes on the manifold bolt. I guess it would also fit on the bolt for the back end of the shield brace to the manifold, but that one is much harder to get to.

The ground strap for the accelerator lever is on UPC U69 A3 of the 67 AIM. It clearly shows (to me) that the bolt that holds the shielding support (rear manifold bolt) of both 327 and 427 engines attaches the large hole end of the ground strap. (This is NOT the coil bracket bolt). The lever end of the strap attaches to the lever in this order: bolt, strap, star washer, lever. The bolt goes into the lever from the driver side of the lever as shown in the photo. The bolt is Cad/Zinc plated. (It appears to be "gold" but that is reflection from surrounding paint)

OK, thanks, since that drawing (and the one in my AIM is the same) looks nothing like my L71, I figured it was not reliable. But if that is the sequence, I have lots of reconfiguration to do .
