I still remember seeing some of the older guys in my Detroit area neighborhood driving them, racing them, wrecking them, and working on them in their driveways and garages during the late 1960s and early 1970s. I was about 9 or 10 when my friend's older brother came home with a used 1964 FI coupe. I've been a "Mid-Year" fan ever since. I remember him constantly tinkering with the fuel injection unit. It was a pretty cool car. I bought my first Corvette (1966 coupe) in 1983 with a little financial help from my dad. Unfortunately, I had to sell it in 1997. I always knew I'd get another one, and finally did in 2006, buying another 1966.

My older brothers friends had corvettes. Cliff and Mickey had 54's Doug had a 55. I would take the 55 out from time to time....In 1963 I would make the trip to Val Strough Chevy in Oakland and drool over the 63 coupe that was calling to me....I ended up with a 57 that I loved. Everyone got involved in SCCA B Production. Mickey is still involved. After getting out of the Air Force in 1969 I bought a 59. Then in 1989 I picked up Doug's ole 55 which was torn apart in 1964. (It's almost done) 48 years of Corvettes that's a long time....bj

I bought my first Vette in 1979. It was a L-82 and I thought it was exactly what a young executive needed to show others I had arrived. As I recall, it was a piece of junk, but I thought I looked good driving it. I have not been without at least one Vette since. I have owned over 30 of them, but the one that really gave me a thrill was a 1990 ZR-1. I bought a corporate exec car at a pretty good price and it was an incredible piece of engineering. I still have one a 1990 ZR-1 (#2950) and it is still a thrill to drive. In 2003 I hurt my back and the ergonomics no longer worked as to getting in and out. I moved to BMW M-3's and they are incredible cars in their own right. My most favorite and last restoration car (2003) was a 1967 427/400 air coupe, so I went out in a blaze of glory. I hate I sold it, but I still have the 1971 454 to drive when I need a rush of torque. After all is said in done, these cars are ego machines. But what a ride!! Jim

                Hi,
I'd had various cars as I grew up; a 55 Bel Air convertible, a 57 Bel Air hardtop, a 64 Impala convertible, a 68 GTO; They all were sold without a second thought. Then came my 71 coupe. I got married and bought an Audi; the Corvette went into the garage and STAYED.
It's the ONLY Corvette I've owned, driven, or ridden in. I believe I'm the only person who has driven it since I picked it up at the dealer.
                Regards,
                Alan

Re: What brought you to this point in your lives ?

In my senior year of HS ('66-'67) I couldn't afford a car washing dishes. I remember Alan Whitney's dad bought him a red/black '63 FI SWC with American Racing mags...to die for...I never forgot that car. Worked in gas stations and service garages, saving enough to buy a '66 GTO. My brother had a '66 tripower 442 and friends all had various muscle cars, but nobody else could afford a vette. Besides, no back seat and no trunk for the beer. One rich friend though actually bought two (wrecked the first one) Yenko Camaros with automatics and then in early 1969 a '48 Anglia rolling chassis which promptly received an "aluminum L88" crate engine from Chevrolet and Hillborn Injection/Crower cam. There were many good times at Minnesota Dragways. We all loved the 427 rat motor and when we saw the '68 shark...we knew it was the bomb. Still out of reach for me and then came the military, marriage and kids.

In '77 I manged to buy a '75 vette...not very impressed and gave it up soon afterwards. Fast forward to 2004 and like so many others, finally decided I had to have that 427 vette. I have always been a car guy and am finally living my dream. I enjoy tearing it apart, cleaning everything up, fixing what needs fixing and then putting it back together. Driving around is fun, but stomping the accelerator on a BB vette is like nothing else. Makes me feel young again and reminds me of those good old days.

Saw the 1963 cover on Popular Mechanics that had a Silver Coupe and Riverside Red Roadster. Was just getting out of GMI in 1964, so my Mother agreed to make half the payments, since I paid for all my college education. Ordered the red roadster in December, 1962, and got it in June, 1963. Since I was still at school until July 1st, Dad enjoyed it until I got home to Kansas City from Flint, MI. Kept it through our marriage, then got a 1966 427, 390 Coupe we had until 1969. Traded the BB for a 1969 Opel Station Wagon, as we had 5 kids. The dealer gave me $500 bucks and the Opel @55HP, but it was a 4-Speed! Have had 12 Vettes since.

Re: What brought you to this point in your lives ?

I always had sports car fever and also 4sp. bucket seats and dual exhaust fever. Though the British sport cars like MG's, Triumph's and Healy's didn't have all these items I was hot for one. The more I studied them, the less I seemed to care about their break downs. Everyone I talked to who had one, would mention all the spares they carried. So by the time I was 14, I was in love with a Corvette, though I had to wait until I was 19 to afford the big $1800 price tag. I never looked back and have had a '62 ever since. When I had my 16th birthday (1969), I remember my older brother giving me a B'day card with a dollar bill in it, to put toward that Corvette purchase. I bought my '62, 3 weeks before I got married. Figured it would be now or never. I can still sit in the garage in a chair and just look at it.

A paper route.... you need a goal when it is 6 am and you need to go out in knee deep snow to peddle the papers.

                            Jim,

I caught the fever in 1963 when I would walk about 6 blocks out of my way going home after school to see the very first split window in our little town of 25k in Texas Panhandle (63 Daytona Blue Dark Blue FI)

When I exisited the Army in 1970 I traded a 1967 Baracuda and $300 for my first - a 1965 Blue Vert (still have it today)

Never gave up on the MoPars or the plastic cars. Still drive the '65 about 2K per year. Don't show it anymore as it is the wrong color for a C2. (gotta be red or black to be considered a real big block midyear according to the Texas crowd)

Most of my seat time today is spent in a C5 or a MoPar

                            Blue

Motor Trend magazine with the new 1963 model.( I still have the issue). Then Sports Car Graphic issue with Jerry Titus testing the 1965 396. Clincher was meeting my wife and she wanted another 1963. Hers was a red , convertible with a white top. Standard 327 and 3 - speed. We bought a '63 black with red interior , white top 340 hp project car when they were just used cars. Still have original wife and car.

Our father had a 57 that he sold before we were born. We saw the pics and he never looked younger or cooler.

My brother and I always loved Vettes and during trips would press our noses against the station wagon window when a "Stingray" came by. This was the late 60's early 70's. Started at 16yrs old with a 69 Camaro in 1980 and was able to get my first Vette (71 T-top) around 1984. Over the years I had a 72 conv then an 80, then the 70 LT-1 conv that I have now. I also added a 64 conv that needs everything and is just sitting in the garage. I still love the lines and style of the old Corvettes, nothing better!
