    Mongoose needed

I need to replace the rebound straps that support the rear end of my car, and could probably use a set for myself too, if they made them!

I am told that I will need "The Mongoose" to have these straps properly applied. Does anyone know where I might be able to borrow this rascal?

I'm located in Charlotte, NC and belong to the Carolinas Chapter.
    Thanks in advance.

Valeria, Corvette Central part # 581172 is a $30 rebound strap rivet tool that works pretty good. Someone made a post about it in the last 3-4 months. Do a search on rebound straps. Gary....

Valeria, I ordered and used the tool that Gary Chesnut mentioned in his post. If you order this, please be sure to go to Corvette Central's website to get the instructions on how to use it. When I received the tool, there were no instructions and I was scratching my head as to how some of the parts were used. If you plan to have your car judged, you will want to refer to the JM to see how the rivets are positioned for crimping for your year model. I thought my rebound strap project turned out very well. I wish you good luck with yours. Brooks Glover (2141)

Thank you so much for the information regarding the inexpensive tool and the instructions problem!

Does anyone know which straps I need as there are two subcatagories for the '60 straps. Corvette Central advertises a '60 E and a 60 L-62?

To quote page 84 of the 58-60 JM "each year is a different length; '58 is 27.24", '59 is 28.36" and 1960 is 29.9". Gary....

            Re: Mongoose needed

Since Mr. Chestnut gave me the hint (there's a difference in strap length between early/late), that implies there's a difference in GM PN for the two assy's. Therefore, I'd expect to see a note in the AIM where the straps are called out for installation reflecting the PN change along with an effective date.

Note, these effective dates don't actually document when ALL cars rolling off the line had the new part! They indicate when the earliest 'possible' build date car could have received the part...

The final assy line typically didn't SCRAP on-hand inventory when a new part superceeded the existing part! And, there was often a period where cars rolled off the line, some with the old version of the part and others with the newer version. So, if your car's VIN/build date is 'close' to the change date, it'll probably 'fly' with either version of the strap...

Thanks Jack for the interpretation. I have a late build date of May 13th 1960. So you think either version of the strap would work?
