    1968 L68 value

I received a tip on a car today so I went to check it out.
Turned out to be a 1968 L68 conv with C07 hardtop, power windows, 4 spd, original engine with intake and carbs. International blue with black int.
The car has sat outside in the sun for approx 25 yrs, it needs one of everything but it is complete and being a CA car rust doesn't seem to be a problem.

The owner hasn't given me a price yet and I'm unsure what it's worth, what do you guys think?

    Thanks,
    Steve

Has it been driven during the last 25 years, maintained?

      Re: 1968 L68 value

Steve, Start by making a list of what the car needs, round up some figures of the costs, and then figure what a restored car is worth, top flite cars will always be worth more.add in a extra few thousand for the unseen problems.remember that when restoring cars its aways easier on the pocket book if you can perform some of the work yourself.otherwise its expensive.

Sounds like a good project car if its matching no.s.

You really cannot put a value on a project car. just acess it value after you figure what it needs and how much it will cost to restore to whatever state you want to put in back into.

        Re: 1968 L68 value

The car has not been driven in the last 25 years, it literally needs everything done.
I can do all the work myself except for Machine work, paint and interior.
This should help to keep the cost down but I still don't know if it's worth the expense.

Another important step in trying to establish cost and worth - does the car come with any documentation????

The seller must not have thought it was worth much for the last 25 years, otherwise he would not have abandoned it outside in the sun. In today's market, it is virtually impossible to recover the creation cost (purchase price + restoration costs) on these cars. What are NCRS restored cars just like it selling for? You could easily spend $50K or much more, even doing most of the work yourself. I know, because that looks like what I am going to end up spending frame-on restoring mine. Having paid $25K for it 6 years ago, and it was a darn nice "original" driver, I will likely have $75K total invested. I can buy one just like it today, already done and painted for $45K. If you haven't done an NCRS restoration before, maybe you should take advantage of this buyer's market and find a documented, numbers matching driver that you can work on and enjoy first.

Very good advice Dennis. For years you have been able to purchase restored cars for less than you can restore your car. There are exceptions of course, but the majority of the time that will hold true.

Sorry for bringing an old thread back to life but I found this car for sale on Ebay.
This is the car I looked at last summer and I thought you may enjoy seeing what it looks like.
The auction number is 290500908934 and the owner has added many photographs.
I hope I haven't broken rules by posting an Ebay auction number, if I have please take this post down.

                Best regards,
                Steve

Thanks for posting that. I am always interested in looking at International Blue 68 bigblocks, since I have one (L-36). Mine would look exactly like that if I left it outside for the next 20 years.... with the hood open and top down.

After reading the description with its emphasis on rare, survivor, original condition, I was a little disappointed to see the AIR pump missing. Isn't there supposed to be a shroud behind the radiator? and that fan looks odd to me, but I don't know what a 68 original fan is supposed to look like - I have a flex fan. The front center grill is missing, but that's a nit pick, (as is the missing antenna) Do original untouched engine pads have orange paint on them? I thought not.

That original paint is going to need more than Zaino to make it a presentable driver. I love an original car as much as the next guy, but this car needs a lot of work.

Interesting. My coupe could almost be its twin built about a month later.

If it is purchased for 20K. It looks like you could spend at least 30 to 40K to make a driver out of it. 20 K in a paint job alone.

The International Blue is showing through the semi gloss that blacked out the vent area at the factory.

                            We think alike.
I walked from this car as it was just too far gone.
I hope someone brings it back to its former glory but I'm not the one to do it.

                              Hi Steve,

THis sounds like the exact same 68 L68 I picked up a couple years back and slowly brining back to life. My example was very complete minus the usual suspect-alt, starter, and a replaced water pump. otherwise very complete. It had not run in 20+ years and was very well rusted, every part needed a rebuild build, and has been rebuilt. for me, I want to have the car judged so that is where I am. It has been a big job bringnig this back from the dead, lots of time and lots of cash.

PM me, I'll send you a link to my project page and would be happy to share what my cost has been to this point, as well as what i would do different if I did it over.

Best of luck in your potential prospect.
