Buy a Corvette, build the engine yourself

Here is an interesting new Corvette option.

Usually when you buy a car you expect someone else to build it for you. But, for a price, GM is letting some Chevrolet Corvette buyers build the car's engine themselves.

A bit expensive. Do you think many will actually do this ?

Doesn't appear you can build your own engine, but only assemble the stock engine. Now if you could really make a custom engine . . .

If I had 110k to drop on a ZR-1, I think I'd find a way to pony up an additional $5,800 for this program.

I think it's cool, but don't expect to see many people do it.

If I was retired and it was maybe half the price or less, I might consider it.

I suspect that the guys helping you out would pay special attention to this engine.

It would be interesting to know what the reliability of these engines would be. I would suspect that they would be very good.

I think it is fantastic. I would, absolutely, spend the money to do this.

for guys who always wanted to build a engine this is a cheap way because the tools you need would cost you a couple of thousand alone

FYI, the RPO order code PBC. Here's the scoop on the program.

Effective this Thursday, July 15, 2010, a new option code PBC (Corvette Engine Build Experience) will be available for ordering on all 2011 Z06 and ZR1 models. Selecting this code provides the customer the opportunity to be directly involved in the assembly of the engine that will be installed in their respective Z06 or ZR1 model.

The MSRP of this option is $5800, and includes one night stay; meals and a driver who will transport the customer from a Detroit area hotel to the Performance Build Center for their engine build experience. Similar to the Corvette Museum option, the customer is responsible for costs associated with travel to and from the Detroit area.

Since the bulletin covers the ZR1 I would think the rumor concerning the demise of the ZR1 is incorrect!

Way incorrect. I have 2011's ZR1's on the floor. Not sure if it will go through 12 or not, but it is for sure good to go for 2011. I have commented on this before as I saw 2011 validation units on the line in April of 2009.
