GM timing on the ZR1 was not good. with less than 15,000 corvettes built last year i wonder if the corvette will survive. i guess i will keep my 08 for a while to see what shakes out but i may have to buy the extended warranty which is a good selling point down the road. gee i might even have to buy tires for this one !

I don't have the numbers at hand, nor the time to look them up --- but they built way more ZR1s in 2010 than Z06. I know the Z06 was 5xx (Yes, that is five hundred and some), and I know the ZR1 was on the order of three times that, but I can't recall the exact numbers for either. Short story is the GS cut into Z06 sales and the ZR1 hit its stride given the economy. at least that is my take.

they needed to use up those ZO6 parts so the GS came about. like 2001 all over again when they took the FRC that did not sell and built the C-5 ZO-6 out of them. at least they are using their heads there at corvette engineering.

Just for the conversation since I have it handy.

          1577 ZR1's for 12.9% of 2010 production.
          518 Z06's made up just 4.3% of 2010 production.

As of today about 492, 2010's and 11 09's remain unsold.

Re: Buy a Corvette, build the engine yourself

Assuming I'm interested in a new Corvette, I would be happy watching the car being built and start a new car for the first time.

I heard of others able to put tires on their car back in the C5 era.

The person who used to arrange those types of visits in Bowling Green has long since retired.

It's an interesting concept but this type of activity smells like a union grievance to me. I don't know if the workers in Wixom are union or not.

It's probably more job security for them too, having to double check all the work a numb nuts like me is likely to screw up.

If you look at the video of an assembly, there is lots of special tools, ganged power bolt drivers etc, that a novice might get his tie wrapped around a ringed finger caught. So I wonder what steps are actually permitted by the owner? Perhaps cleaning a gasket surface, starting a few bolts, or maybe as a big treat-turning the engine over on the engine mount.

It will be interesting to hear from a participant to see just how "hands on" the assembly process will be.
