    69 lemans blue

I am trying to match color for my 69 lemans blue coupe with PPG color. My car was strippped when I got it . So i don't have any original color to match. the only place I have original color is in the door jambs. The color is so thin on jambs I'm not sure if its a accurate area to match. I know the factory used paint standard sample cards. Does any one know where I might be able to find on to borrow or buy. Or any other suggestions. Thanks

Brad, I do not have a '69 976 card, but do have a '70 976 card. Am not sure if there is a difference in the formulas.

          Brad,

if you call your local paint supplier they can tell you if it is the same.

I have an old can of Dupont Lucite 5030L Le Mans Blue it is about 1/3 full it is still liquid when you shake the can. It is a one pint can. It is 40 years old though.

Ralph, I don't think the lacquer is still good. Does any one else have access to a 69 976 code factory paint standard card? The 70 976 is different. Thanks

The modern day paint chips are ink, not paint, so they are not a good comparison. What he wants in the 3X5 metal plates that were sprayed with the paint used that year. Thank goodness there was not the variations in color back then that are today. Even the salesman's color flip book was paint in that era.

                    Dick,

When I was having my car painted, I drove down to the PPG dealer/Colorchiplibrary store (which is located near me - San Diego area) and was able to purchase the salesman's color sample page for '66. As you say, it has actual paint samples on it and it helped me a lot. My thought would be that Brad might want to call them to see if they have an old sample plate or salesman's sample to sell him. My be worth a shot.

I went to the old DuPont and PPG stores and looked for those pages for Brad. Missing out of the book. I am not sure that the chip is large enough to scan. Bigger problem is going to be the size of the metalic flake in the paint. Todays common flake is larger and has a different shape, causing it to stand out more.

I "heard" that (Junior's) House of Kolor will custom mix color and flake size. I am uncertain if that is true but that is worth a shot if you get a good sample.

Rob, that is where I went for my color. I bought a pint of lacquer and a pint of waterbourne BC/CC which is all we can legally spray where I' m at . I did a spray out of both colors and compared them to some areas on the door jamb that I thought had enough original color on them. They both appeared close. So i ordered the BC/CC as I have heard nightmare stories about the new lacquer. The problem is when I did the comparison the BC/CC wasn't cleared. I didn't realize how much brighter the clear made the blue . So now I'm am trying to figure out which color is correct but I don't really have any thing accurate to match to. Thats why I am trying to find the factory standard card. I need something accurate to match to. Thanks for any help

                            Brad,

                            I hear you. It's a frustrating process.

A couple of thoughts . . . You might try a duller clear and see how it looks. Another option is to reach out to other owners with '69 Lemans Blue (maybe at a regional/nationals) who've recently restored their cars and ask if they can share the formula - just a thought. Finally, you might want to send an email to the Chuck Berge, '69 Team Lead, and ask him if he could help, or could hook you up with someone who can. His email is in the Restorer.

                            Good luck,
                            Rob
