65 L78 Air Cleaner Cover too much paint

    Hi,
I took a hit for having an over restored air cleaner cover on my 65 L78 as the JG says"Typical covers are not totaly painted on the underside"
How much paint shall I remove from mine below?
    Thanks,
    Gary

light misting of black overspray on about 40% of the covers underside will please the judges. mike

        Gary,

I have the same situation. What is your plan for removing some of the paint?

Tough to do without your attempt being obvious to the judges.
I would try (a washing effect, cautiously by small trial steps) turning the cover with the silk screen upward, cover the silk screen, then lightly spray the center half with paint thinner and let the color run down and out of the stud hole until the desired result is achieved. This should leave a some what typical gradiated finish.
If this method negatively effects the outer surface, just re-shoot it.
          Good luck and HaND

Thanks very much for your input.
I think I will have to find out what type of paint it is first before I attempt to remove it. It looks like powder coat to me!
I'll keep you informed of progress.
            Cheers,
            Gary

Gary, I don't know if you would want to address this as you live down under but the silk screen is not correct. Richard Fortier does a great job in replicating the original silk screen. Check the spacing and font sizes on Jodys lid and yours.

Hey guys, I'm new to the C2 world but not to Corvettes. I'm waiting to get my 1965 396 convertible in about 2 weeks. Looking at the pics I have of the engine bay, I have a lot a work ahead of me. I have 3 quick questions; the car is a 396 car with a NOM 396. Is the air cleaner painted gloss or semi gloss black paint, were there ever chrome valve covers or just painted Chevy orange, and was there ever a dual master cylinder with power boost used on 65 BB? Thanks in advance. I've order a few books about C2 and restorations but won't be here for a week or so.

                  Nick -

                  1. I'd describe the air cleaner lid as more like semi-flat than semi-gloss.

                  2. The valve covers were painted.

                  3. 65's with power brakes had a dual-circuit master cylinder.

Thanks John for the info. The car has a single master cylinder now but I would like to upgrade it to dual master with power boost. It has MT valve covers (ugly) and a chrome air cleaner. I would at least like to get it looking somewhat like stock, don't know at this point if I'll make it a full restoration project.

I'll be looking for side pipes and bolt on knock off wheels, any suggestions? I keep checking the parts site and nothing yet.
This is a great site for resource and references from what little I've read so far
