    1964 gas tank leak?

I just bought a 1964 convertible and filled it with fuel for the first time. I have a fuel leakage below the left rear bumper. I know there is supposed to be an overflow in this area but I don't believe I have the tank overfilled. Any ideas?

    Thanks,

    Joe

Joesph it has been awhile since I owned a 64 Corvette convertible, but I still have my 63 service manual and 64 supplement service manuals. Looking at these books I do not see an overflow for the standard 20 gallon tank.
Your gas cap should be vented.
There is a possibility that the gasket between the filler neck and the gas tank is permitting a leak when the tank is full.
If your gas cap is not sealing gas could slosh out into the rubber catcher around the filler neck and the drain hose for this in my 68 and 70 is routed into a vertical portion of the bumper to drain.

Definitely an over flow hose for 63 and 64. 63 hose may be smaller than a 64 up hose though. Look in the AIMS.

the overflow hose isn't attached to the tank itself, but rather to the rubber boot just inside the fill area. in order for fuel to drain thru this overflow hose, gas would have to be located in the boot. more than likelyu, your 46 year old tank has pin holes. the pin holes usually develope between the tank itself and the straps that secure it to the frame. a pair of pads(paper impregnated with a petroleum distillate) are siturated between the straps and the tank. these pad ,over the years, hold moisture which precipitates the pinholes. Quanta,a comany that advertises in the Driveline, can provide a new tank that will pass judging just fine. mike
