    Rear 68 Caliper Brake Line

    Hello Guys,
I had my Calipers SS Sleeved. When I took off the rear Calipers I noticed one side had the spiral wrap at the bend around the caliper. The other one was just brake line. In 68 which one was correct ? Thanks for your help. Jeff

    Jeff,
I cannot say with any certainty what was correct- I was hoping someone who can answer chimes in or someone with and orig could post.

The pic in the AIM really doesn't go to any length to suggest having the spiral armor at the bend, nor does the JG specifically note this detail.

My 68 had spiral on both but I would hardly use my car as a benchmark! I have replaced both with the spiral armor style but would also like to know what was correct if anyone can shed some light.

    Thanks
    Pat

Jeff, I know the 70-72 cars didn't have the spiral armor on the rear lines , 68-69 ? maybe send team leader Chuck Berg a message or e/mail. This will bring the post to the top maybe someone with a 68/69 will chime in.

        Thanks guys,
This is funny because the one with the spiral armour looks correct for a 42 year old survivor ,old and rusty. The one without the armour looks used but nowhere near the other one.Hope someone can solve this. Jeff

Jeff I might be sticking my head out there on this one but I would bet the spiral wound one is correct for 68, I think 69 was the first year they changed, but there may be some cases that a late car may find both depending on when they ran out of each side.

Thank you Ed. I was fortunate to fly out to Bloomington for the day and found a not as used but close line with the spiral armour on it. We'll see. Thanks again, Jeff

I can tell you for absolute certain that my 1969 was delivered new with NON-ARMORED rear caliper brake lines. I could not say for sure regarding 1968, though.

By the way, while my car was originally built with the non-armored lines, it has the armored lines on it now.

There was always discussion about the armor wrap back in the day - one camp loved them because of the protection they provided from stone impingement, and the other camp hated them because the armor trapped moisture, salt, mud-pack, etc. and accelerated corrosion of the brake pipe.

Jeff I just checked my original owner 68's rear steel brake lines connected to the calipers. Built in February 1968 it still has the original brake lines and they are both just plain ole steel lines, no spiral wrap.
