My new lower outer pivot shaft and bushing has some slop to it when assembled on the a-arm and attached to the steering knuckle. My old one does also. Both are about the same without any grease in them. Is this normal? Shouldn't the shaft and the bushing be tight to one another and the knuckle?

Re: New lower outer pivot shaft bushing
"Slop" is a rather nondescriptive term, a couple thousandths is likely normal, especially without grease in them. remember the parts move in relationship to each other in actual use, and grease will take up a couple thousandths or so. This discussion does reinforcr the need to grease the early front ends very regularly. Is the slop within the new parts themselves (likely by design) or between the new parts and the old parts (more troublesome)Bill Clupper #618- Top

Re: New lower outer pivot shaft bushing
The "slop" I speak of is between the new bushing and the new shaft. I can try putting grease to it and see how much it tightens it up. Seems to be more than a couple thousands but I did not measure it.- Top

Re: New lower outer pivot shaft bushing
Bushing and shaft should be sold as a set generally, so I'd expect it to be ok, but we are in real generalities here without measurements.Bill Clupper #618- Top

Re: New lower outer pivot shaft bushing
I have three sets of bushing/shafts here to pick from so I took the set with the least amount of play and use it. Even that one has some play in it but not a lot. Assembled it on the front end and greased it. Still shows some play in it even with the grease. Assembled the entire assembly in the A-Arm and with everything connected it tightens it up. I suppose I am being too critical of this assembly but I dont like the idea of any play in it. That just creates a place for unnecessary wear.
Thanks for your help.- Top
