The most correct winshield for 72

Who makes the most correct winshield for a 72 and what is the correct sealant to use? Does anyone have a recommendation on an istaller in the central NJ area?

Urethane (which replaces the original Thiokol). Do NOT use butyl tape, and RUN from any shop that wants to use it.

So why did Ecklers sell me Windo_weld Ribbon sealer 3M 08610 1/4" bead
      Eckler #20361

The disclamer on the back of the 3M box says "This product is designed and intended for use as a replacement to original equipment butyl installations. Not intended for whinshield or backglass where OEM urethane was originally used."

Instruction 6 on the box says" Refer to and follow instructions for 3M Windo-weld Superfast Urethane, PN 08609 for urethane set windshields."

IF you go one Ecklers site "Did you know? Many people in our hobby refer to tape as butyl tape"

In the past few days I've been looking thru the archives, and everyone pretty much agrees on urethane. But what's up with Ecklers.

I've just taken out my original w/s for frame repair and want to get everything I need at Carlisle to replace it. Can anyone give me a list of the adhesives and blocks I need to pick up(73 coupe). I'll return the Ecklers product.

Happens all the time. The vendors for the '67-'69 Camaro side of the hobby do the same thing; butyl tape is easy to use, so they harp on that and sell lots of it, and many less-than-ethical glass shops use it too as a short-cut to doing the job right, maximizing their profit.

Technically, it's illegal to use butyl tape to install a GM windshield (or ANY windshield originally installed with Thiokol or urethane), as a car so-repaired will fail the MVSS windshield retention requirement in a frontal impact.

It's also substandard from a vehicle perspective; windshields (and back windows) installed with Thiokol or urethane contribute significantly to the body's torsional stiffness, utilizing the glass as a body structural member. Butyl tape has pretty much no shear strength, so a fixed glass installed with butyl contributes nothing to the body structure.

What's cheap and convenient is a LOT different than what's correct, for many reasons.

Regarding a most correct winshield. I would try:
          O. E.M. Glass Inc.
          Chenoa, IL 61726
          800-283-2122
I had my door glass replaced, it has been judged and passed. No deduction points.

            Phew!!!

I just installed my windshield last week on my 71, I ran to the shop to see what I used, it was the windo-weld 8609 product mentioned however it did not say urethane. I got it at NAPA, sometimes we forget the stuff thats hawked in the catalogs can be found up the street and is better quality. Returns are a piece of cake too!

I think I'm good to go as the fastest this car will see is 2-3 mph on the ramp of the trailer

As far as installing it, 2 people can handle it, you just have to choose the right thickness windo-weld so that your moldings look correct.
