Upshifts to third,if done quickly, result in a brief grind. Clutch is adjusted for half inch play. If shifted slowly no problem. All other gears are normal regardless of RPM. Any suggestions appreciated.

Unrelated to your grind issue (probably a weak synchro), but your clutch pedal free play shouldn't be less than an inch; that's pretty close to contact with the throwout bearing.- Top

James,
You are going to have to pull the transmission to determine what's wrong and fix it anyway.
It is usually the synchronizer teeth on third gear worn out or the slider for third and fourth gear.
If it's the slider you will be lucky. Sometimes replacing the old slider with a dove tail slider will give you some more use from a worn third gear. Consider it a possibility when rebuilding.
You need a good transmission guy and the transmission laying on the floor.

Freeplay should be about one inch with the standard clutch linkage ratio and about 3/4" with the fast ratio.
I'd also look at the 3-4 shift rod adjustment before removing and tearing the transmission apart.
What kind of transmission oil are you using? The GM spec is Mil-L-2105D, which is modern 80W-90 GL-5.
