I'm sure that you are probably right. I just haven't seen enough original cars to think differently.
Reba:
There is a big difference between the '67-'69 and '70-'76 plastic. I have samples of both that I would be happy to share. I have several '70 up plastics but only 2 earlier ones which are on finished handles. The difference in the diamond pattern does not show up well in photos. I will have some of each at Carlisle so perhaps if you are there you could stop by and compare and take your own pictures. I would like to help in any way I can. I will be in K40-41.

Re: 1967 emergency brake handle style?
Wayne,
My June 29 67 has its orginal e brake handle. It is all black, no chrome.
Looks like at some point, they ran out of the chrome ones, and went back to the all black one's, or they were reaching the bottom of the barrelJerry Fuccillo

Re: 1967 emergency brake handle style?
This is the all-black parking/emergency brake handle from #07873
(January 11, 1967 build date)
I tried to get an angle to the light that would show the diamond pattern (pics 2 & 3). The plastic is split lengthwise up the center (picture 4).
Can (or should?) this split be repaired? Is it likely to get worse if left as-is?- Top

Re: 1967 emergency brake handle style?
"In early production (through approximately VIN #6000 + /-), the parking brake handle is solid black. A production change, however, from the solid black handle to one with a chrome cap and chrome side bands begins to appear following VIN #6000 +/-. Examples of both designs appear throughout the model year." - 1967 Corvette TIM&JG, p.38 (Fourth Edition, Winter 2005)
According to Noland Adams' book, VIN # 08947 should be all black.
According to the NCRS Judging Guide, VIN # 08947 could be either all black or have a chrome cap and side bands.- Top

Re: 1967 emergency brake handle style?
Philip, The black knob is swagged onto the release stem inside the handle. The stem has some knurling on it to grab the button on initial installation. If you are lucky, it can be pulled off with minimal damage, and then glued back on. If the handle is loose, use it as a "puller". There may be better ways to remove it but I haven't discovered any.- Top

Re: 1967 emergency brake handle style?
Phili:
Whenever I have removed the plastic, the whole assembly is out of the car but you could probably use the same method while still installed. Use a piece of solid wood about 3/4" thick by 3" long by about 1" wide. Place the block lengthwise behind the black plastic so it sits on the rear edge securely as possible. Slide the plastic forward until it stops on the button. Tap the wood with a small hammer toward the front of the car. The plastic will knock off the button. I put a plastic bag over the button held on with a rubber band to catch the button when it flies off. There is a spring between the back of the button and the first level of plastic inside. Some are pretty stubborn but I have never had one refuse to come off and have never had a plastic break BUT... remember it is 40 year old ABS plastic. Usually it can be replaced by forcefully pressing the button back on with your thumb (DON'T FORGET THE SPRING & DON'T HAMMER IT BACK ON). If it pops off when you operate the handle then put a small amount of JB Weld in the hole and raise the handle as high as it will go and push it on again and let it set over night. Hope this makes sense.

I finally found a picture. This is a `68 that I have and known since the early 80`s. It was a very original car at that time, serial number 1445, with "pilot" and "sample" stamped on many interior items. Not the best picture, but note the black handle.
