    Confirmation needed

Could someone confirm for me that my brother's '62 T10 transmission case should be a T10-C. The engine was built Nov. 4th, '61 and the car assembled Nov. 10th, '61. There is some confussion that it might have been a T10-B. I'm shopping for a correctly dated transmission for it and want to make sure I am looking for the correct one.

    Thanks

The 61-62 JG states that the cast iron main case was used as late as VIN # 2400 with a build date of Nov 2. With any production change, there was inventory to use up and there is no exact date for the transition. I believe you would be safe with either transmission. If you check the archives there should be some very good post on this subject.

      Re: Confirmation needed

My 2654 11/13 vehicle build date had the aluminum case in it. Unfortunately my photos are gone but per my notes it had WL31-2 stamped on it with my VIN.

      L-November
      3-3rd day of month
      1-61
      2-2nd shift

Had to find a tailshaft housing and found T10-7D 10-10-61 which I used.

Engine was built 10/28, 340 hp.

The JG reference is to changeover during 1961MY. I would expect all 1962 corvettes to be using aa aluminum case. I did a "restorer article many years ago on a very early T-10 out of a '62 with a S/N below 1000.

David, I guess I should learn to read! The information I provided was for a 1961, not a 1962. I agree with William, 1962 should have the aluminum main case.

            Re: Confirmation needed

I have discovered an article from the Restorer CD written by Wayne O. Loron that is full of good information.
It indicates that the '62 Corvette would have the third style of T10 case, that being the T10-C aluminum case. It also indicates that the tail housing would have been the T10-D aluminum housing, the fourth style used on Corvettes. For anyone interested in this article it is titled "1957-1963 Corvette T-10 Four Speed Transmission Casting Identification". By Wayne O. Loron
It also goes into side covers and rear bearing retainer plates on these cars.
Thank you all for your respones.

              Re: Confirmation needed

I am looking at a BW T10 transmission for sale that includes this statement in the ad:
"This is a correct transmission for the 1962 Chevrolet 409 and other GM cars using the Borg Warner. The Corvette did not come with a close ratio until later on".
It is my understanding that the transmission that I need for my car would be a "close ratio" transmission.
Am I correct? Or am I missing something?

              Thanks

Actually the close-vs wide ratio use in '62 Corvette was engine dependent, 250 and 300hp used the wide ratio as the 4 speed option, 340-360 hp got the close ratio variant.

                  David -

He needs to check his facts - every Corvette 4-speed from '57-'61 was a close-ratio box (2.20:1 1st gear), until the wide-ratio box appeared in 1962.
