Orange Pulleys?

Hello All,
I just got my copy of Nolands Book # 2 and noticed on Page 359 the L79 being installed on the line looks like the Pulleys might be Orange! Were these painted with the engine and then changed on the line? Also My trim Code 414 A only has one letter for the ECL code. is this because it is an AO smith body? Does the A mean anything? I can't figure it out. Any help would be appreciated. By the way the car has A/C and P/W.

I don't think the pulley in that photograph is painted engine orange. It appears to be darker than the rest of the painted portions of the engine.

During the C1 era when some balancers had integral pullies, I believe these pullies were painted with the engine.

However, I believe that most, if not all, pullies for the C2 era were separate pullies and were installed at St. Louis.

In the early '80s, a car often seen at the Cypress Gardens show was a one owner '63 Z06 that had orange engine pulleys. The owner took some heat, but refused to paint them according to conventional wisdom since they came to him that way.

I think you are seeing a dark grey, it doesn't match the crank dampner, and is closer to the color of the sway bar and or shocks.

A.O. Smith bodies didn't have the full ECL code on the trim tag - only the "A" for coupes or the "B" for convertibles.

Well I also have a picture that came from this website somewhere of a whole room full of engines and a man with a hoist loading them and they all have orange pulleys so I just wandered if they are always supposed to be black or if sometimes they are orange or some other color. I just sanded mine and they were black although there were two different coats.

What year was the picture from? What plant did the engine come from? Corvette plant? I have seen orange pulleys, but not in use on the engine under discussion in this thread.

I think the photo you are referring to was of C1-era engines. Many of these used a balancer with an integral pulley. The balancer was always installed at the engine plant so, for those with integral pullies, the pulley was also installed at the engine plant and painted with the engine.

Im trying to find it I think that both pulleys and the W/P belts were painted as well. I will post it when I find it

I found it I was wrong it was as you stated from 1955 with intregal HB Pulley here it is,

By the way, these were C1 era engines but they were not destined for a Corvette. Note the oil pans. This is not a C1 Corvette oil pan configuration.

That's correct - those are 1955 passenger car engines; photo was taken on the shipping dock at Flint V-8.
