    Black Out paint margin

Would anyone have a picture of an original hood black out? I am interested in the line where body color and black out meet and next to the hood hinge.

    Thanks for any information!

      Thanks Terry!

A person emailed me and I described the look/process for the hood black out. I described how it should look and a process I would use. He felt a picture would be helpful. Just thought someone might have a picture.

      Thanks for responding!

            Ray,
            I might have that photo.....

The front underside is sparse of any paint

the hood sides were sprayed body color onto the hood frame/ underside of hood overhang and then the tape appears to be applied so the very curve of the angle of the frame to the underside of the overhanging hood is body color.

With the hood off the car and upside down ....If you place the masking tape on the overhang of the sides of the hood just so it barely hits the vertical frame and curls that would be a match.

Imagine if you took a round shoestring and placed it in the curve, that would be the margin

The right side margin seems a bit wider near the hinge in that the black does not reach as far up the vertical frame edge as it does toward the front

the back edge seems sparse of black paint and more like overspray.. have to take a closer look

Didn't they use a 'mask' not tape. It was held by hand while they sprayed.

Will Ray use a mask or tape?

                Either will work.

                I'll use tape on mine.

I am paisting a copy of my Email to Mark.

                  Hi! Mark

I wish I had taken pictures of this process at the Nationals, but I didn’t, it would have made it easier to explain. The paint margin runs along the edge (front to back and along the back of the hood, latch end) where the horizontal lip meets the vertical bottom. The body color was sprayed on the bottom edge of the hood, (hood was sprayed in place and the front of hood received very little paint) then a mask gig was used to protect the vertical paint edge. The paint line was not a clean line; black paint line would very along the bottom edge of the hood. A process that I plan on using is to tape the vertical (Body color) and then slightly, very slightly peal the tape away from the vertical section. This should produce a look that would be applied at the factory. The black-out at the bottom 6” + or - edge of the hood near the hinge should have the paint flair out towards the vertical edge of the hood. (Would look like a feather on an arrow with the point towards the latch or windshield) The section of the hood towards the radiator would receive overspray only.

I hope I have helped. I have a friend, Dennis Sagamang that may be able to provide a picture, if I can get a picture I will forward it to you.

Hi! Dennis, if I provided any information that is not correct, please correct for Mark.
