What are these holes under my dash?

I was taking some pictures under the dash of my '56 and I noticed these holes, 1 on each side under the corners.

Any idea what they are for?

      Yep, courtesy lights.

      Same as 53-55's.

Odd, that's what I thought too but I couldn't find where the small buttons would be to turn them on.

Switch holes were not drilled unless the car was equipped with the courtesy light option. They are in the door post, and the exact location varied. But usually inboard of the top hinge. -Dan-

That's what I figured and mine looks like it has never been drilled for for that option. So were the holes there on the bottom ALL dashes just in case?

All of the 56 57's lower dash panels had the provision for the courtesy lights whether or not the option was chosen.

The Mid-50s Olds used the same bezel and lens.

Making holes for the lights after the car is assembled would not be easy. Fairly large holes and 3 slots, so the dash was made with the courtesy light provision. Drilling holes for the switches is easy. -Dan-
