I live in the Dallas/Fort Worth, Texas area. I am in the market for the smallest and lightest enclosed trailer I can find for my '65 Sting Ray. What do you trailer experts recommend? I have the cash for a new one but will consider like-new used enclosed trailers. I really want an all-aluminum one since my GMC V8 Sierra Pickup tow vehicle is NOT a diesel. -Clark

Contact fellow NCRS member Carl Carbon at Trailex. They make the smallest, lightest and best (in my opinion) enclosed trailer anywhere. They will ba at Carlisle if you are headed that way. If not, email or call them at www.trailex.com.- Top

Re: Need an Enclosed Trailer
A 20' box trailer will do it. You dont need a diesel. I towed either my 67 Vette or a 69 GTO with an Avalanche 1500 chasis.
Carmate makes a basic , serviceable unit that wont require a second mortage.

Re: Need an Enclosed Trailer
Yes, a 20' trailer is your minimum target. But, those who've gone to the small side of the ledger often have buyer's remorse that they didn't buy a slightly longer rig. The 24-26' seems most popular among those who show up at NCRS events.
Why the extra length? Well, in addition to having more space inside for 'extra' things (floor jack, tools, Etc.), you have the ability to move the car fore/aft to find the 'optimum' position for final placement relative to the final tongue weight of your load...
On tow vehicle, a 1500 series truck WILL get the job done especially when I hear a 'flat land' home location (e.g. Texas) mentioned. When you start to ponder hauling through mountain country (Colorado, Pennsylvania), the advantage of moving up to a 2500/3500 series tow vehicle begin to make EXCELLENT sense...
Last, finding those 'good' used enclosed trailers isn't as easy as you might think. Many simply don't go onto the resale circuit as they wind being pressed into 'static' service as a 'remote' garage. Those that do find their way to the resale market are often owned by racers who are either getting out of the sport/hobby or moving up to a bigger rig. In either case, they may have seen CONSIDERABLE mileage/use in their prior life...- Top

Re: Need an Enclosed Trailer
i have a 20' pace. i pull it with a 1500 avalanche. no problems. trailer was about 4k new. get one with an escape door so you can open your door inside the trailer. otherwise you have to climb out the window of the car.Attached Files- Top

Re: Need an Enclosed Trailer
Catch-22 issue with a side door equipped trailer is the physical placement of the door...
Most come from the factory with the door in a 'standard' position. But, that varies with the actual car you're hauling + its physical position inside the trailer.
To 'optimize' the tow load, you really need to get the car inside the trailer and move it fore/aft while watching the effect on tongue weight and mark the floor when you've achieved a 'correct' tongue weight profile. THAT'S the position you want the car to be secured at for hauling...
Now, where is that position relative to where the trailer mfgr located the side door? You have both fore/aft and floor-up considerations to match for a correct + useable side door. Many find that what they bought is 'close' but not optimum for their particular car. Others get 'lucky'...- Top

Re: Need an Enclosed Trailer
Here is another option. This guy did not need anymore power that a 6cyl and he did some hill driving. From Boston Nationals, 2007. It was custom made for a Corvette. Do not recall who had it or price (but not out of site), but know he was moving to FLA that year. Picture may be to small to read however it says Montrose Trailers.comAttached Files- Top

Re: Need an Enclosed Trailer
I am looking for one again also.....I bought new in 90 and sold and regret it, oh well, anyway I had a 20" Wells Cargo and it is best in my book unless you want to pay $$$$$$$$$$$ more for trailex which I have no experience with, I plan after several inquiries to buy another Wells Cargo in 22' new with 6" lowered height. good luck in your hunt.Michael
