    66 Re Carpet

When replacing carpet, what do about the small ferrules in the kick panels. I don't believe they are visable under the screw heads but if there is a method for reinstalling in new carpet or even in backing material, I'd like your ideas.
    Thanks,
    Pete

Installing new ones would be the right way to go IF they are available. (?) I just recently faced this same question and quickly decided that reusing the old ferrules was out of the question. I omitted them and just used a contact adhesive to attach the carpet.
Their original purpose was to locate the exact attaching points for the installer, keep the screws from snagging the carpet and help retain the carpet to the cardboard.

Pete, the repro kits for these come with nice cone washers so one can not tell from the outside. It's more important to assure the correct screws are used (not sure if 66 uses two different types, see AIM)

Another option is to get some good carpet dye since the repo carpet will never be correct.

          Thanks guys,
I think I might just for heck of it cut down the back flare of the ferrules and try to reuse them. No big loss if it doesn't work.

            Re: 66 Re Carpet

            John, Alan & Scott,
Here was my solution: I used a nail set to hold the ferrule from collapsing while I straightened out the bottom lip. I then used a MAP torch to heat the nail set red hot and burned holes through the carpet using the existing holes in the back of the kick panel. I then used the nail set one more time to drive the ferules in place and then peened over the back lips and it looks just like the original panels with new carpet.
            Being retired is great!
