    '54 distributor dwell angle

I've noticed a little rough running or missing, and am going to do a tune-up, and check the points with a dwell meter to be sure the dwell is within spec. and not varying too much when increasing engine speed. I was checking some references, which stated 38-43 degrees dwell, but also have found some saying 30 degrees, which is typical of an 8 cylinder. What is the correct dwell spec. for a '54 6 cylinder Vette?

Without looking at any OE service data the 38-43 is probably in the ball park. Typical dwell for 8/6/4 cylinder engines is 30/45/60 degrees.

Increasing dwell means the points are closed longer, which allows coil saturation to higher revs, If the points only have to open half as often as on a four-cylinder compare to an eight, the points can remain closed longer.

'54 Motors lists the Corvette engine at 41-47 degrees, nominal point opening at .015 inch.
