Experiences with "repro" engines??
Hi. I am looking for anyone who has had experience with a '"repro" engine for C1 Corvettes. That is, an old block that has been "re-broached" and the pad re-stamped. I know there are several companies out there that do this. Who does the best job? Who makes the most authentic engine? Anyone had experience with this?? I am looking for an original block for my 57 FI 283 HP VIN 6148 assembly date 08/28/1957. But failing that, I'll need to have one "made". Thanks.

Re: Experiences with "repro" engines??
PS I don't want to start the whole "is restamping wrong?" discussion. I am never going to sell the car and would never misrepresent it as "original" to anyone. I just want my car, which has been in my family for over 30 years, to be as 'right" as possible. That is why I am still trying to find an original block. So, has anyone had experience with any of these companies? Or experience judging a car that had one of these engines? Who does the best job?Thanks.- Top

There are lots of Genuine 1957 Corvette blocks around not restamped. Try contacting a few long time Corvette restoration shops that do C1's and chances are you will find one sitting on a shelf they are holding waiting for a car to restore.
It would give you a certain measure of satisfaction knowing you replaced your long lost engine with an engine that came from a Corvette....and has numbers that work for your car.
Have it rebuilt without decking the block and voila..you are back in business.
Make sure you get a Flint/Saginaw block and not a Tonawanda block....which were for passnger cars.
People here will walk you through the details.
