This a question for those folks that have done a rebuild on thier C! steering box.
I just installed the CC steering rebuild kit for my 58 project. I did it by the numbers (John Hinckley article & ST-12) and it all came together well. The sector shaft wheel/bearing assembly went in...fairly tight though, and I torqued it to the specified 50lbs. Of note, there is a slight angle to the sector shaft wheel/bearing unit...I assume that angle is there to allow the worm gear to engage correctly.
As I was turning the steering wheel during the adjustment I noticed a fine grinding sensation throughout the turn. It is a uniform grinding and it makes me think there is an issue with the sector shaft wheel/bearing unit??
Has anyone had this same experience? Does this indicate too much pressure on the bearings? Should I back off on the torque?
Thanks,
Jim
