    replacing oil pan '65 SB

    Hi,

I want to replace my chrome oil pan from my '65 300HP for an original one.
What should i do with the new gaskets when I'am instal my pan, should i soak them in oil, water or leave them the way it is, should I use gasket sealand for the rubber rings.

    Twan,
Use a sealer that will hold the gasket and rubber seals in place. I use a silicone type sealer, it will split your gasket if you get wild when you tighten it.
I tighten just enough to get a seal then let the sealer cure before the final tightening.

I would highly recommend using the one-piece rubber/steel oil pan gaskets. You may lose a few judging points, but it is well worth it in my opinion. These newer design gaskets have steel core and hole inserts to prevent over-tightening and deforming/squishing. They only require a small dab of sealer at the 4 places where the semi-circular "humps". I've used these several times and have zero leaks after many miles which is more than I can say for the original multi-piece designs. There are two versions of this gasket, i.e. depending on whether the front hump is thin (original pan) or thick (service pan).

        Twan,

I use a VERY thin even application of permetex ultra black on the block and in the grooves where the rubber seals install. At that point you can press the gasket and rubber to the block and it will glue itself in place. Then, coat the pan rails the same way and put a very small tack coating on the pan front and back radius. Last, go to the block again and put a small dab in each corner where the rubber and side gaskets meet.

Install the pan and pull the four corners up just snug then start the side bolts, SNUG everything to tighten. That ultra black will keep those cork gaskets from leaks, just remember to use a small amount and wipe with your finger any sealant you think may squeeze out inside the pan.

That RTV will clog the oil pump screen so be easy.

If you have any issues with the rear main seal this is a good time to address it. Don't use fel pro 2900, use the newer GM seal, the part # is in the archives. I think it's available from fel pro also but not #2900.

Don't ask me how I know. I am not sure if the #2900 seal is to hard or too soft.
