    Tank Stickers

In discussing repainting my 1979 Coupe with my restorer, he asked if I the car had a Tank Sticker. As the car has never been disassembled I assumed that the sticker would still be in place. He stated that he thought GM had discountinued the practice of placing a sticker on the tanks of the Corvette. My question is, is there any truth to this statement and if so when did GM stop the practice. Also as the car is basically all original and never been disassembled is there an easier way than dropping the tank to retrieve the tank sticker.

    Thanks,

    Ken Chase

I have never seen a sheet on the tank of a 79 but I have found build sheets under the carpets of 78's and 9's.

Ken, I don't think there is any "easier" way to retrieve it but if you want to confirm it is actually there, you could disconnect the bib at the fuel fill tube and gently move the rubber to the side. With a flash light ( watch the use of an electric light so close to the fuel) you may be able to get a decent view of the paper.

I don't know if they discontinued the practice for the later C3s, but my 95 has a sticker on the tank.

This way does work well, A trick I learned from someone is you may want to use a mirror over the bib area, shine the light into the tank and look at the reflection to verify if the sticker is there. It is a little easier that way.

Taped to the tank. Could be anyone's guess if it stayed there. 79 could have been the same.

In place of the tank sticker, could you use information from the dealer invoice? You can go here http://www.corvetteactioncenter.com/...x.php?cmd=area and see if the Allied-Vaughn folks have a copy of the invoice for your car. Options, color info, prices, etc. are on the invoice.

Thanks for the lead. I contacted both the action center and the archives at GM Canada. No luck as the car was an export nothing available from US sources and GM Canada didn't keep records, although they did provide a letter verifying everything that would have been on the sticker.

I was able to remove my 79 tank sticker by reaching up and just peeling it off the tank. It was around 1989 i am pretty sure that i had the tire carrier and mufflers off of the car at the time. The sheet is much larger than the mid year stickers

Bill, is correct I removed one front a 79 coupe last summer for a friend and the same way Bill did reached my hand up to top of tank at drivers front area and stick your hand under paper and gently remove. and there was also a part of one left in the rear strut rod bracket at the rear diff. area.

Yep. Earlier stickers are portrait format; about 73 they switched to landscape format.

Thanks to everyone who gave men hints. John I am trying to locate Allied-Spence to see if they can help. Bill & Ed thanks for the info. Did you reach up from the rear of the car or did you reach up towards the front.

Thanks again guys, this is such a great forum for researching our cars.

The sticker was on the passenger side at the rear top of the tank. I was able to see it wrapped slightly around curve of tank. On the 93 you can see the sticker by removing one of the passenger side tail lights. My sticker is under the strap and the bolt on the strap will not budge so i left it alone.

Ken, on the 79 coupe I removed the tank sticker it was on the driver side in front of the tank,You could see a cornor of the paper sticking out.they may have attached them anywhere they wanted so it maybe anywhere on the tanks, take a extendable mirror and light and see if you can see it .
