    1966 Window Sticker Questions

I am looking at a 1966 corvette that has a copy of the window sticker that the second owner claims was in the glove box when he bought the car in 1970 along with all the other documenation. My concern about the window sticker is this the vin is typed in not stamped and there is no listing of the soft top color or tire type?? What happened when a window sticker got damaged or lost when the car was new at the dealership? Could it be possible that this window sticker was a dealer replacement piece?

    Matt -

You're looking at either a dealer replacement or a reproduction; does it have a 6-digit number at the upper right corner? Can you post a photo or scan?

My 66 window sticker lists the top color and tire info, also there are two different size fonts on the vin #.

That's the "Ident Number" (also seen at the top section on the tank sticker and Car Shipper); it was assigned by the plant when they accepted the dealer order for production, and was used to track the unit in the Production Control system prior to the VIN being assigned when the car was actually built.

You hardly ever see it on a reproduction window sticker, as you need the original paperwork to know what the number is.

Yes, it has the six digit number on the upper right had corner. Is there such a thing as a dealer replacement. Why wouldnt the top color or tire designation be listed? Would them not being listed indicate a standard top or tire on the car.

It is hard for me to see on my laptop, but that looks like an early VIN. If I am seeing that right it explains the typed VIN. Early cars (at least the C3s) were shipped to the dealers without the window sticker so the cars couldn't be sold until "release day." The window stickers were sent later so that the Maroney labels could be put on the cars in time for the release of the new models.

My 1970 window sticker is like that (VIN number all one size) and the sheet even still has the three folds in it from where it was put in the envelope. The only reason I have it is because they taped it to the window rather than glued it -- per my request.

It is a early car built around late Sept 65 I believe. Any thoughts??? I spoke with the second owner who bought the car off the original owner in 1970 and owned it till around 2006. He said that all the documentation including the window sticker shown were in the glove box.

Those experts that can verify original documents to those GM records may be looking at some of these tests, there is a lot on the web on how to age paper...

Black vinyl trim was standard, as was a black top and blackwall tires; those items don't show on the price sticker unless they're replaced by an option (other color trim or leather, white or teal top, whitewall or goldline tires would show on the sticker).

I have images of original '66 stickers from cars earlier than yours that have rubber-stamped VINs; you may have a dealer/Zone replacement or a reproduction.
