    '62 Generator number

I searching for a correct generator for my '62 I had determined that part number 1102268 would be correct.
However, now that I have found one, in double checking the part number I am not so sure. I see in the AIM it states in the legend on that page, "10/26/61 was 1102268 Generator". And in Adam's book, it states, "The 1962 generator was part number 1102268 on the base engines until AIM 10-26-61, the approximate date serial number 20867S102200 was assembled. Thereafter, it became part number 1102174, which continued in use through the end of 1962 Corvette production".
My car having been assembled November 10th of 1961, with serial number 20867S102550, it must have had the 1102174.
However, is it possible, being that close to the October 26 date, that my car might have had the older number 1102268 generator on it? I hate to pass up a chance at getting a correct generator. It has a date stamp of 1-I-28 on it. Wouldn't that be Sept. 28, 1961? That would put it within the date range of my car.
I have not bought this yet but would like to do so tomorrow if I can get an answer to this quandry right away.
Thanks very much for any input anyone wishes to throw out there.

62 #311 already had a 2174, as do about a dozen cars in my files below #2200--Noland is wrong in his understanding of that notation, in that it reflects what already happened on the line, rather than giving direction to the assembly line. You definitely need a 2174 for a 250 or 300hp car.

I believe 2268 gen remains correct for the spl performance 62 engines....(340 and 360Hp) and they should have the 4 inch pulley for hi rev. protection as opposed to the 3-5/8 pulley

Externally, besides the different tag, the 1102268 or the 1102173 have solid mounts and are otherwise almost identical to the 1102174 except for the drive end plates. Change the 1947307 drive end plate to a 1941168 aluminum drive end plate with the rubber mount and it will look correct with a new tag. The 1941168 aluminum end plate is the one used on the 1102115 power steering generator from 58-59 that is commonly found in place of the correct 1102043 on the solid axle Corvettes. They are all 35 amp (except the 043), and the 173 and 174 are internally identical. The 268 has a different armature and field coils, but visually no different other as described above.
I could be wrong here, but I'm sure Mike will straighten me out.

A bit more clarification on my car. It is a 340hp 4speed car. Does that make a difference?

            No. Transmission makes no difference.

            Good luck

But does the 340hp engine make a difference in which generator was used? My inclination is to use the 102268, but I am not quite convinced that is the correct one.

                David--
I was headed down the wrong path because of the way you phrased your question. You misread the AIM and Noland. That had to do with the 250 and 300 hp cars (the 2268/2174 thing) The 2268 was already being used in 1961 on the solid-lifter cars, and simply carried over into 62. With a 340 car, you need a 2268. Make sure that whoever you're considering buying from has a correct one and not something incorrect with a reproduction tag.
The correct 2268 has endplates that are cast iron. The front has distinctive "nubs" on it--the rear plate has the large bearing area in the center with a stamped steel plate covering that. I did an article on that in about 1978 or 79--nothing has changed in our knowledge of those since then. That should be available on the RESTORER CD.

Thanks again for all your input and help with this issue guys.
I believe the 2268 is correct for my 340hp car so I bought it. Pictures seem to bear out that it is indeed the correct generator.
Mike, your article in the restorer does also.
                  Thanks again!
P.S. I put the rear axle asssembly back in the frame yesterday and will finish up that project today hopefully. It is getting close to being a rolling chassis again.

My 62 is a Jan 17 car. It has its original 268 dated Dec 20, 61
