Working on my 1965 and I'm concerned about metalic content in modern paint. Does anyone know of a source for original formula DuPont acrylic lacquer paint? The color is Silver Pearl. I would deeply appriciate anyone who could direct me to a source.

Re: Silver Pearl Acrylic lacquer Paint ?
J C, none of the original tints, binders, etc are available from any of the paint manufacturers. If my memory is correct, that color is about 75% clear and binder. It is going to take quite a bit of trial and error to match. If you have a panel that still has the original paint on it, you can have it scanned by your paint jobber. That will get you somewhere in the color family, but you or your painter will need to shoot a test panel to see if it matches. If not, you will have to have it tinted to match

Re: Silver Pearl Acrylic lacquer Paint ?
Hi JC,
The painter who sprayed my car continues to use only acrylic lacquer.
He and his supplier have become comfortable with having to trying more than a few formulas and tints before coming up with a suitable match to original lacquer found somewhere on the body. The metallic colors are even more difficult to match.
I believe it's really worth the effort.

Your comments are appreciated. It's good to know about PPG. Besides the color isssue, and more significantly, I'm concerned about the correct metalic size and content. Been told that the PPG jobbers do not have the correct size metallic.
Do you think it is possible to locate a source for nos Silver Pearl lacquer paint?
Thanks,

Re: Silver Pearl Acrylic lacquer Paint ?
JC,
I think your concern of the size of the metallic particles and pearl content relates to trying to match lacquer with a base clearcoat urethane. The current lacquer formulas for 65 will not have any pearl in them and the size of the metallic particles in the lacquer should be OK, just spray a test panel and check it in the sun. If it is not satisfactory, you can adjust your formula from there.- Top
