By the way, which tag did you get? Shape?

Thanks, Tom. (BTW, your articles on rebuilding rear ends are great.)

Does the tag go on the front or the back of the housing? "Front or back" meaning its position when installed in the car.

It Corvette Central's p/n 581133. Circular with piece of pie shaped cutout. It's for a 3.70.

Just remove the nut and it just goes under the nut at the 2 oclock position.

Tom, might be helpful to post your "correct" chart for the tags since the reproduction chart is incorrect. Gary....

OK, here it is. NCRS has finally acknowledged that this is correct. BUUUUUUUUUUUUUUT, all the vendors (pass car as well as Vette) refuse to change this chart in their catalogs UNTIL they receive some kind of "official" notification from some "recognized" organization, such as NCRS, that THIS is the correct chart for ratio tags. For MANY years, the 3.36 and 3.55 tags were reversed.

Now, there MAY be (and probably is) a variation to this chart. According to the information in Ken Kayser's FI book (a GREAT book for ANY FI owner), the 55-57 pass cars and 56-57 Vettes, NO MATTER WHAT THE REAR RATIO WAS, all had a solid tag (with only a hole for attachment). The pinion/ring gear teeth numbers were printed on the tag (which could eventually become obliberated in time). But for sure, the 58-62 (58-64 for pass cars) tags were as shown above. My confidence comes from pulling LOTS of rears with virgin tags from many Chevys/Vettes.
And then, let's throw one more fly in the ointment. There have been a couple of people (pass car owners) who have reported having TWO tags attached to their rears. One for 3.36 and one for 3.55. Is that really possible? Have other strange things been reported over the years that seemed unbelieveable?????????

I just noted your chart on rear end tags. My 59 PG has the 3:36 tag at 2PM. When I had it apart to change the bearings. It seemed to have the original gasket on the housing. Being the XXX owner, could some have installed something other that a corvette gear? How do you verify the correct raitio without disassembling the unit

                Pat -

Mark the pinion yoke or driveshaft, turn the rear wheels one turn, and count the rotations of the driveshaft; the number of turns will tell you the ratio (3 = 3.08, 3-1/2 = 3.55, 3-3/4 = 3.70, etc.).
