Numbers help - 1970 storage tray

    Hi Everyone,

Found this ink stamp number on the bottom of the storage tray of the jack compartment of my 1970. My car is a early Feb. 1970 car. Is it a date? (2nd, November 5th, 1969) or is it a part number?

The 1970-72 Judging Manual makes no mention of any numbers.

Kurt that's what I would say also 11-05-69. The 2 could be a shift number but i don't think so have seen higher numbers like 5 and 6. Could be a job number a batch number or a workers number or something else. Maybe someone else can add more info.

It does represent a date and NOT a part number.

Paul is correct. The first digit is an internal plant code (line, shift, etc.) John Hinckley probably knows. That is one item that will be added to the updated judging guide.

          Hi Kurt,
Here's the stamp on the bottom of the tray from my mid-January built 71.
The spacing of the groups of digits sure makes it look more like a date, and the '#' sign is gone.
Also, maybe a bit more black on the sides than is often seen?
          Regards,
          Alan

I have seen them both ways--separated by month, day, and year, and all run together with no spaces.

Interesting. Usually there's a very distinctive pattern from the tray being "nested" inside another tray when it was sprayed, like the picture below. It's almost as if Alan's tray was not in another tray when it was sprayed.

                Hi Pat,
Thats the way it is on the other sides too.
Also, there is VERY little flocking in the tray, but lots of black paint!? Notice how much of the paint beyond what you'd expect to see is 'splatter'.
                Regards,
                Alan

Sure looks like it was not inside another tray when sprayed. I've never seen one like this before. Very cool.

                    WOW-
The #'s on my 74 tray are so hard to read and your tray looks pretty good compared to mine.

Re: Numbers help - 1970 storage tray

The tray that Alan has could be a bottom tray when the black out was painted. I have seen 1 during judging tray that has more black out then the construction material finish and it was most likely the bottom tray also. They are rare but they have been seen on the judging field. So when they stacked the trays for black out the bottom tray could have a big variation in the amount of black out that was applied. When compared to the other trays.

I saw one that had the sides completely blacked out, and I figures it was the bottom tray in the stack. I guess like so many other things it all depended on how the guy who sprayed them felt at that time.

FWIW: The original tray for my 1970 has no stamp on the bottom. The later SERVICE replacement that I bought does -- go figure.
