If the car is not in the "stolen" database (I like Terry can't recall all the TLA's, but Ed explained it well) and you will be registering in a different State from where the car has the "salvage" title from you might be able to do a "Mechanic's Lien" and get a new title through that process. Gary, in NC at least, any car, 1968 or earlier, brought in from out of state has to be inspected by DMV before they will issue title. Same for a mechanics lien. If it is a 1968 or earlier, has to be inspected. I have just completed a labor lien on a '68 and have been been well educated on this process.

I went through that hassle last year when I went to register mine. What makes it so bad is I took it by the Highway Patrol office to let them take the picture of the VIN,etc. For some reason Raleigh never received it. They don't send out the titles until they do either! After going through the whole procees again they still didn't recieve it! After I called the patrolman a few more times, everything was straightened out...after a few months! It was definitely a pain.

From what I understand the whole process started because of some politicians, etc and his buddies trying to get around some registration laws on older cars

Also some insurance companies will not insure a car with a salvage title and some banks will not finance them.

An inspection of the VIN plate on the car is now required for ALL vehicles that change hands in Alabama. Doesn't matter if the vehicle is currently in Alabama, or from another state. All vehicles get a VIN inspection.

This is part of Alabama's compliance with the National Motor Vehicle Title Information System requirements.

Cars older than 1975 do not get titles. The registration is your proof of ownership for older cars. No one in their right mind carries the original registration form in the car. That would be like carrying the title to your car in the car. A photocopy is legal for proof of registration.

              Ed,
About 15 years ago when California was again going broke a judge fined me $458.00 the price of regestration for having a photo copy. He was a piece of work and since then I have the original on board with my title at home.

That is a big change for Alabama, which used to be the state that titles got laundered thru to lose mileage, salvage notations, etc. NC DMV would just shake their head when AL paperwork came thru.

Yep, I understand it is not legal eveywhere, but in Alabama it states on the registration form that a photocopy is acceptable, even for vehicles that have titles (1975 and newer).

Yep, Bama used to be the place to wash vehicles...and I don't mean with soap and water. Times have changed.

                      Re: Salvage Titles - Removing

Arizona has a Restored Salvage category of title, which is no solution, but a Salvage vehicle can be put back on the road if properly repaired and inspected. I believe it used to be that after 3 years, the restored salvage was dropped and it became a regular title, but I can't find that provision now, so it must have been changed to comply with the new national system.

Many cars have been saved from the Salvage yard including one of the 1956 SR2's.

I wonder what the different ways are a salvage yard can resell a vehicle ( original title, salvage title, bill of sale etc..) and what the factors are that make the difference.

When a salvage yard buys a vehicle and gets a title and then salvages out the parts what resposibilty does the salvage yard have with the title? Lets say the salvage yard parts out a car to a skelton..can that skeleton be sold as a titled vehicle.
