    Hey Mark,
I'll wish you good luck as well. I needed an 1108400 also. I looked for about 3 or 4 years. I actually found a core on ebay, just after the guy posted it. Had a buy it now price of $275. A little pricey, but I bought it.

Keep seaching the Driveline, swap meets, and ebay. Stay vigilant and patient. There are still some out there.

On another note, some recent posts on the parts market in general suggest guys with parts are not letting go of stuff in the down economy, since prices may be down. They are waiting for a sustainable economic upswing to start selling again. If this is true, I'm afraid we might have to wait quite a while.

Mark, the 1108400 starter with 69 and 70 dates are very hard to find. About 2 years ago I located one for my 70 454 and probably paid more than I should have, but I wanted it and it was available. If you search Ebay they do come up from time to time. GrayGracy (Chicago Corvette) usually has some listed, but be very cautious of any dealings with him. Good luck.

Thanks Joe, I've seen his stuff on E-Bay and I know what your saying. Hopefully something will turn up someday....

          Thanks,

            All-----

The scarcity of 1108400 starters with 1968-1970 dates is a result of the fact that this starter was originally used only for Corvettes with big blocks during these years. So, except for starters still on the engine they were originally installed on (and with the owners not wishing to separate them), the supply of donor starters is limited to those originally installed on big block Corvettes most of which are likely somewhere out there "floating around" in the pool of rebuilt starters. Since the starter frames (the part with the numbers stamped on it) are completely interchangeable among a WIDE array of starters, those original Corvette starter frames could be out there anywhere. Disbursed as they are into the pool, they would be like finding needles in a haystack.

Another source of starters with the correct dates would, of course, be SERVICE starters manufactured during the 1968-70 period. I doubt that many of these were ever brought into GMSPO inventory during that period, though, since there would not have been a very great SERVICE demand for new starters at that time (even though, in SERVICE, the 1108400 starter was cataloged for other non-Corvette applications). In any event, the vast majority of those starters are probably out there in the rebuilt starter pool by now, too.

Quite a few years ago I found an NOS GM #1108400 starter [not for sale] with a later SERVICE date . I snapped it up. You see, to me, an NOS 1108400 starter of ANY date trumps a used/rebuilt starter of a "valuable" date code. EVERY TIME. PERIOD.

              Joe,
So what your saying your better off having an incorrect date stamp then no stamp at all.....

This would bring less of a deduction than no stamps at all ?

              Thanks for your help!

There's no such thing as a starter with no date. All starters, PRODUCTION and SERVICE are date stamped. GM never sold starter frames as a separate part in SERVICE. If they had, then a starter using a SERVICE frame would not have had a date, but, like I say, starter frames were never sold separately.

All I'm saying is that, TO ME, an NOS starter of the correct part number but an incorrect date is preferable to a used or rebuilt starter of the correct date stamping. The reason I feel this way is that an NOS item of the correct part number ensures as-new functionality and as-new or nearly as-new configuration. Those attributes are very important to me. Personally, I just do not place a lot of value in date stampings.
