I have two master cylinders for power brakes for a 1972. The casting number on both is 5460346. One is cast into the PB cyl right-side-up. The other is upside-down. Which is correct for the '72? Does it make any difference which one I use for NCRS judging?

Re: 1972 Master Cylinder Casting Numbers

I don't have a definitive answer for you. However, I strongly suspect that the difference in orientation of the casting number was just a function of differences in the pattern numbers used for making sand molds for the master cylinders. Often, there will be slight differences between patterns. I don't think that anyone has ever determined which pattern numbers were in use for any given model year and I doubt that anyone ever will. For the most part, patterns were used during a much longer period of time than a single model year, so they will usually "overlap" model years. There is no cast-in date code on these master cylinders that includes a reference to year, if, even, there is any such date code, at all.
I would check the forward brake line fitting machined surface for a very small stamping. Most, if not all, 1968+ master cylinders had a julian date stamping on this surface. That might be judged and, whether it is or not, will tell you if either of the master cylinders you have were originally used on a 1972.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top
