    The Duke was right

I was over to Carlisle for the Car Show, and with all this discussion about Oil, I made it a point to find out what other Vendors and car sellers knew and used in their Vintage Cars. Well no one knew about CJ-4 CI-4 or any other Diesel Oils for Vintage gasoline engines. Most knew that some zinc was needed, no one knew about phosphorus. Their replies were, you have to use Valvoline VR1, Royal Purple, castrol 20w50, Kendal, Amisol and, I don;t know my Son puts the oil in. I will continue my quest next week at Hershey. DUTCH

If one converts a vintage engine to a hydraulic roller cam, then one can use modern, gasoline engine-rated oils (S-) with no problems. In my long-stated opinion, hydraulic roller cams are the way to go.

Ask the mavens about the American Petroleum Institute. My guess is that most have never heard of API or the fact that they set engine oil standards and certification tests for the entire auto industry and have been doing so since before most of us were born.

If you run across a vendor selling boutique oil, check to see if it's API certfied.

Makes you wonder about some of these "car guys".

I put the Shell Rotella CJ-4 diesel oil in my '67 L71 based on Duke's suggestion. I have now driven it about 500 miles, and it is fine, and in fact, the rear main seal that was leaking on the Pennzoil my dealer put in the car is not leaking much at all anymore. Wonder if this oil helps expand the seals too?
