If you check the picture I posted, near the top of the picture, you will see a toothpick inserted between the brushed aluminum overlay and the shifter console underneath. I have not removed mine completely yet, just pried up the edges to see how it was attached. It is glued on, and should peel off like a sheet of aluminum. If I understand correctly, nothing else "comes out" besides the ash tray door - that whole center section encompassing the rubber shift-boot and ash tray door is a permanent, fixed part of the larger console.
If possible, save the shift-pattern indicator plate. If it's a 4-speed, my understanding is that the reproductions are not quite exactly the same, and the NOS replacements are the 1963 style, which were then used for SERVICE on 1964-1967. They have tabs on the sides (designed for the unique 1963 shifter center console) and are not the same as the PRODUCTION shift-pattern indicator plate used from 1964-1967.- Top
