looking for feedback on C1 Repro Windshield Frames

OK all you C 1 guys........I'm doing a ground up on a 61 for a customer and I am at the point of pre-fitting all the chrome/trim to the shell in bodywork. What I want to know is this:

    1. If anyone has used the new windshield frames/posts and were you happy with the fit and quality of them

    2. Is anyone makeing door posts? If so the same quality/fit question applies.

This car will most likely be judged but not on a national level. The owner wants an over the top fit and finish so I need to know if I'm better with trying to rechrome pitted posts or useing new parts.

    Thanks, Rich

Re: looking for feedback on C1 Repro Windshield Frames

    Rich,

I just finished installing the windshield for my '61. I had all original parts, but the lower stainless molding and the upper stainless header tube couldn't be straightened and restored. I ended up buying repro parts to replace them.

The first time I went to assemble the windshield, I also found my lower track was bent and wouldn't align with the bottom of the windshield (yes, it was the bottom of the glass). I was able to find an original lower track for a replacement.

I had my original windshield post rechromed.

The new lower stainless molding and the new upper header trim had to be polished after purchasing them. The finish was not up to the quality of the remaining restored parts.

I was never satisfied with how the lower stainless trim molding fit. One corner just wouldn't stay all the way down on the track. My original molding was thin in a few spots and had a couple of pin holes in it, but when I tried it on the lower track, it stayed in place.

I also found the upper header tube was not the same gauge material as my original. The new piece was much thinner and the tube was more flexible then the original.

My finished assembly looks better then a lot of the windshield frames I have seen on the judging field, but not as good as I would have liked. I wish I could have salvaged the original parts.

    Regards,

    Dennis

        Rich,

I should have what you need. I replaced my 60' windshield post this Spring and then rechromed the original ones. I also have the original upper stainless that I have had repolished and yes, it is a thicker gage and contains a higher % of chrome that the aftermarket. I also have new replacement windshield wipers and other stuff if you are interested. In particular I have two rechromed windshield post, one original repolished upper stainless and one original lower stainless and two replacement windshield wipers.
