    Engine Suffix/Engine Code Label

Did the 1972 base engine 350CI 200HP engine with a TH400 have a engine Suffix/ Engine Code number on the rear of the passenger side valve cover. It was a small label with a number on it identifing the engine type. If it did what was the number and does anybody reproduce it.
    Thanks John

ALL Chevrolet engines, and likely other makes as well, were supposed to have engine suffix labels. At least from 1967 and newer -- Including my 2008 Corvette, and the ones they are building this week.

Search is your friend. If you had an earlier Corvette 1969 and older -- all the vendors sell a reasonable facsimile. For those engines with a three digit code, including your 1972, you are SOL from them. A search using "engine suffix label" or maybe scroll down this page to the four of five free automatic searches for someone who is a frequent poster here who has a side line making them. Some people are passionate about the strangest things.

Thanks for the valuable info took your advice. I was looking at the N C R S Judging Guide for the 1970-1972
Corvettes and there isen't anything mentioned about the label. it talks about the suffix code stamping on the engine pad and gives you a chart with the various code letters etc.
        Whats your thoughts?

My thoughts are we should include information and maybe a photo or two in the next revision of the judging guide. I also think there have been photos of real suffix labels posted here on previous threads.

The information is in the JG already.
They do exist, though originals are rare.

              Re: Engine Suffix/Engine Code Label

              Hi,
              Here's the label from my 71, 350/270, 4-speed.
I remember picking it up off the car wash floor the first time I squirted off the engine.
I've retrieved the picture from a earlier post.
              Regards,
              Alan

John now that I have gone home and done your homework for you these are my thoughts:

We write books, but many people don't read them. Perhaps in this day and age it is easier to ask an electronic question than to pick up a book and READ it.

                Now YOUR homework assignment:
                1) Be sure you have the 4th edition of the 1970-72 TIM&JG, or the 3rd edition of the 1968-69 Manual.
                2) Look at Page 58 in the 1970-72 TIM&JG, or Page 42 of the 1968-69 manual.
                3) Read the paragraph about engine suffix code labels you will find there.

Do I have to develop a test to ensure you do your homework?

                Patrick, You deserve an A.

                  Hi Terry
It's been a long time since I have been in school, But I have to admit it that I guess you are never too old to learn. I don't how many times that I have read my TIM & JG 4th Edition 1970-72 cover to cover and used it to make a lot of decisions throughout my cars restoration, but I have to admit I missed this one big time.
So as for homework I completed assignment 1-3 and I am fully aware and educated on the subject and there will be no Test necessary.
And you are right Patrick deserves and gets a A+
                  Regards John
