HOw MANY REAL TRI POWER CARS ARE OUT THERE !!

Im new to all this !! Greetings from Australia !!!

How many real tri power cars ( 67 , 68 or 69's) would you estimate are out there percentage wise ??
What type of credentials are best to verify a real car ?? shopping is an absolute nightmare regarding these cars

    Thanks !

Re: HOw MANY REAL TRI POWER CARS ARE OUT THERE !!

    Gud day mate!
The Black Book shows, for 1967:
    2101 L68s
    3754 L71s
were made out of a total of 22940 cars.
    In 1968, it shows:
    1932 L68s
    2898 L71s
were made out of a total of 28566 cars.
    In 1969, it shows:
    2072 L68s
    2722 L71s
were made out of a total of 38762 cars.

If you have an original tank sticker or window sticker, verified by the new dealer shipping reports, yours would be real if it shows tri-power. But, the engine you have may be a restamp and not authentic or original to your car, and so it goes...

      Thanks for the reply !!
For example there must be atleast 50% more 67 cars out there than what GM ever made !! Very Scary stuff

Exactamundo! But remember those cars were very much in demand and I would guess very few were ever really junked out and lost, so a much higher % of them would still exist in the pool. But you need verified docs to be sure, otherwise caveat emptor.

Maybe we should see how many manifolds were made in 1967 or check under the exhisting ones for date codes? Also the carb #'s tell a story too.

I have both and the 41 year old paper is very fragile. I don't see how a new piece of paper, more than likely a photocopy, would verify anything.

Mine are also very fragile, and the tank sticker has a big hole in the middle. However, the tank sticker only has the dealer number, zone code, identity number and order number, no VIN. So, unless you can verify what dealer your VIN was shipped to, your tank sticker could be from any car. The new dealer delivery info service will verify what dealer (number, zone code, and name) your VIN was shipped to. You can then match that info to your tank sticker and feel pretty confident (though still not 100%) your tank sticker is from your VIN. The window sticker can also be faked, but at least if the dealer delivery info matches the window sticker data, you have more confidence in your car's lineage. Now if you have had your car since new, and have all the original paperwork, you don't need this service.

DOM, I was not aware there are easily seen date codes on the Winters manifolds, however it would be easy to find a rerplacement one that would match your car's build date. And the numbers on the carbs are easily done to match the build date of the car, or you can easily find original ones that match. That will not help sort out fakes.

Some Tank Stickers like the 69's on have the last few numbers of the vin hand written on them !!

Im sure there are lots of fake aged tank stickers around aswell which im sure most of you are aware of .

Here in Australia when a car is referred to as a number matching car its expected to have its original drivetrain including motor in place but in the US its interpreted much differently

It is a problem here with "matching numbers" terminology. Yes, usually places (like ProTeam) say that and mean only the engine, not anything else. And unless they say "The Real Deal", there could be issues even with the engine pad stamp. I have found few cars with an entire matching numbers drive train, pretty rare.

Re: HOw MANY REAL TRI POWER CARS ARE OUT THERE !!

If you are lucky, like I am, one of the previous owner of my 67/435 did a title search of my car in 1980 and we now have every title back to the selling dealer that matches the tank sheet that was removed in 1990. I found 3 of the previous owners and asked them to send me a notarized letter of what they remember about the car. Two of the three returned me letters. I realize how lucky I am to have indisputable doc's like I do.
But its amazing to me that I have meet a few that say they are still not sure about my car!. I guess, that's what make the world go around.

What I know for sure is that its a GREAT car and a lot of fun to drive. We drove it to our St Louis Chapter meet yesterday.

Well said. I think if it weren't for the judging process and frantic auction/turnover/profits of these cars, it would all be as simple as just enjoying the drive. And of course, if the judges weren't all assuming you are a car flipper looking to make big bucks .

We went through the Judging process and it was a great experience. In 2008 we received a Top Flight, with a score of 97.6, at the 2008 NCRS Nationals and 2009 we received a Bloomington Gold (96.7). Not bad for an unrestored car with 2 repaints.
But the thing I enjoy the most, is taking it out for a drive on beautiful day like we had yesterday. This old car runs soooo good and is a blast to drive it would be a shame to just let it set in the garage.

Out of the 1932 made in 68 I've seen about 8,500 of them.
