    70 LT1 NA9 Charcoal Canister Pics

Here are a few pictures of my charcoal canister. Do they require servicing, and if so, how?
Also, should there be a hole cut out in the lower fender splash shield to access this? I dont have the AIM in front of me, but it seems like I remember seeing a drawing showing a hole cut of the splash shield.

Basically, the only servicing of these canisters involves replacing the filter located on the bottom. You should be able to remove the bottom of the canister to do this. You can still get the filter under GM #7026014. They come in a package of 6 but the whole package only costs about 4 bucks.

There is no hole in the splash shield that I know of to aid removal or installation of the canister.

Joe is correct there is no special hole to access the canister you have to remove ether the left hand side grill or remove the rocker molding and lower splash shield. The only other way could be to just reach over the frame from the engine side remove the cover and drain remove and install the filter. But I think that would be very difficult if even possible. The filter is the only service item.

Does your car still have the yellow emissions service label below or above the tune-up service label. Above and behind the brake master cylinder.

        Paul,

I do not recall seeing the label your talking about, the car is at the body shop getting ready for paint. I will check it out the next time I am there.
If I dont have label, is it repoed?

Well, we've been involved with Corvettes for well over 40 years and are the original owners of our cars (1969 convertible for me; 1970 coupe for Terry). So, in that period of time it's hard not to pick up a few bits of knowledge here-and-there.

              Re: 70 LT1 NA9 Charcoal Canister Pics

Well, I really appreciate it. I am new to this game. I have not driven a corvette much less owned one until the last couple of years. I bought my first LT1 a couple of years ago out of San Francisco that was wrecked then while looking for parts for this car I came across another wrecked Lt1 out of Eugene OR. Now I am trying to restore both. When I am not working as a professional pilot, I have been working with my mentors repairing mid year corvettes, He is retired from the corvette business and plays with it on his own terms. I work with him almost every week and I now we are so busy I never get to work on my cars. One of my cars has been at a body shop for over a year waiting on paint and I am getting ready to start on the chassis restoration on the other.

                Hi Terry,
                Nice pictures of your canister.
I noticed the drain hose on the bottom. It's similar to the one on the canister from my 71 in that it's has a thin wall relative to it's diameter. I believe it's unique in that respect and it's unlike any other hoses on the car.
                Regards,
                Alan

Terry yes a reproduction of the emissions label is being made. Check Corvette Centrals online catalog there P/N 263215 $4.95. Other companies should also carry this item. Dr. Dobbins used part of my original label to make the reproduction.

Also here are some photos from my car 71 LT-1 and one from Corvette Central. My 71 is the last known LT-1 with this label or decal.

                  Hope this helps.

                    Hi Paul,
In looking at your 71 engine compartment picture I noticed the stamped metal oil filler cap. I thought I'd see a rubber push-in cap. Did they change during production?

Alan, is this drain hose on 70/71 cars only? I had my apr72 car canister out when restoring my car and there was no drain hose. Which looked to never have been removed.

Only 1970-71 had the drain hose. It was eliminated for 1972.

Alan on early LT-1 as mine is they still had twist in style fill cap not sure the exact date this changed. Production stopped about 300 cars after mine was produced till Nov due to a strike ate the plant.

My 71 LS5 has the yellow decal. I don't see very many cars with it. Also, the part number for the label in the judging guide is incorrect. I hope who ever is making the repop's gets the correct number..........
