    Another '68 Question

I have two sets of front spare tire mount tray bolts, one set is 6" long and the other set is 6 5/8" long. Can anyone tell me if one set is correct for '68 and if not, what do I have? Thanks

Are you measuring the bolts TOTAL length from the top of the head to the bottom of the threads (as shown in first attached photo) or are you measuring the length from the base of the head to the bottom of the threads (as shown in the second photo)? Also, are both sets of bolts configured as in the attached photo?

      Joe:
Yes the bolts look exactly like the ones you show. I measured the TOTAL length and the long one measures the same as the one you show. If I measure the other way, the long ones are 6 1/4" and the short ones are
      5 3/4".

The shorter ones are the ones you need for a 1968. Many think that the 1968-82 bolts were all the same. However, they were not. The 1968 bolts were GM #3929208 and were about an inch shorter than the 1969 and later bolts, GM #3956389. The GM #3929208 bolts were discontinued from SERVICE in July, 1972 and replaced by the 3956389.

Also, would you please check one other thing for me? Please measure the length of the 1968 (short) bolt from the base of the head to the end of the un-threaded shank portion (i.e. the point where the nut seats against the shank of the bolt). This is shown as dimension "A" in the attached photo. Also, please measure the length from the top of the head to the end of the un-threaded shank. This is shown as dimension "B" in the attached photo.

Oh Crap now to look for a set of 68 tire bucket bolts. Measuring as in your Pic "B" I get a measurement of 4.75 inches.
Joe would you know what these are for. On the end of the bolt is a backward S.
            Thanks, Grant

These appear to me to be GM #3956389 bolts used for 1969-82.

Excellent. Thanks. I was not sure of the exact dimensions of the 1968 bolts. Now, I am.
