    67 Oil Drain Plug Question

67 327/300 hp car. The Tech Guide states that the oil drain plug should only have a 1/8" thick head. I have purchased several "original" plugs from reputable dealers and they all have 1/4" thick heads on them although they are listing them as 67 oil drain plugs. Are the originals really that thin? Anyone have a picture? Thanks.

I don't know if the original drain plug heads were EXACTLY 1/4" thick but they were a a LOT closer to 1/4" thick than they were to 1/8" thick. I don't know where someone came up with that 1/8" thick dimension.

Re: 67 Oil Drain Plug Question

I haven't seen anyone ever measure one under the car, if they look good, they probably are. I don't think that part of the manuals has been changed since the original release around 1983 or so, when Joe Clark and I were writing the first versions and needed to define the pan drain plug, in the middle of the winter without a handy example, so we did what we could from memory. Judges seem to know the intent and I'm surprised the wording has lasted this long...

        Kirk -

You must be working from a really OLD JG; that oil drain plug description was revised years ago to read "7/8" across the flats and approximately 1/4" thick".

OK, so much for that. When I get some batteries for my camera, I will take some pics and get your opinions. Thanks.

Kirk -- plug should look like this, minus the magnetic tip. The "circle A" is just one of the acceptable head markings.

Should be orange though. Yours looks like mine does otherwise.

That looks like exactly what I have! What head markings are acceptable for 1967 SB oil pans?

Re: 67 Oil Drain Plug Question

Fasteners, like most of GM's purchased parts, were almost exclusively sourced from multiple qualified suppliers. It was a NOSEBLEED exercise in salesmanship to get a sole source qualification for a purchased part!

The headmarks I've seen on these oil pan plug bolts include: A, Circle-A, L, TR and F-C. I'll bet there were others as vendors were known to change their ID marks and some suppliers got out of the business while others entered over time...
