    L78 Pulleys and Belts ?

I am having a problem finding the correct belt between the crack shaft to the water pump for my 65 Corvette 396/425. My water pump pulley is 3864480 and the crack pulley is the cast iron 38996 that's all it had on it. I beleive they are the originals as the car been in storage since 1978. I am looking for the correct belt between the crank and the water pump. I tried the Quanta 3837810LV and it was very loose so they said try 3837810SV but it's still loose. Any suggestions ?

    Thanks,
    Ted

Ted. Best to make sure that you have the correct pulleys.

    Here's the list:
    Crank pulley: 3863108
    Water pump pulley: 3864480

Sounds like you have the correct water pump pulley, but I'd check your crank pulley and make sure you have the correct one.

    Good luck.

I had the same problem with my L78 and Quanta belts, if I remember correctly LICS has the needed belt in 2 sizes. Over the phone we discussed length needed - ordered a new one and it fit like a glove.

        Hi Ted,

I had the same problem with my '66 L72. I ended up having Quanta send me 4-differnt belts before I got the right one. The LV long version too long, the SV short version too short. I had them send two more of the SV before I got one that fit. I had to ask them to specifically go and measure a belt to get the right one. Even then, it was tight getting the belt on the pulleys. You have to install the belt on the crank pulley first and then around the w/p pulley while off the w/p and then try to get one of the pulley bolts started in the water pump pulley flange. Not a job I look forward to doing again.

My suggestion would be to measure the SV Quanta belt they sent and ask them to go and find "another" SV from their bin that is shorter than the one originally sent. You will be suprised at how much a few factions of an inch can make when trying fit that captive belt.

Thanks, I'll recheck the crank pulley as I didn't see that part number on it. Maybe it was changed out during it's racing life time. The tought part is buying a replacement $$$

I'll give them a call at Quanta so I don't go broke exchanging it with LIC who have been great with all my orders. It will be nice to finish this before I put the body back on the frame.

            Thanks,
            Ted
